Chapter 6 - Ninety Seconds of Oxygen-6

The heavy iron handle groaned, a terrifying, screeching sound of rusted metal against concrete that resonated through the dark, suffocating space beneath the table. The valve resisted for a fraction of a millisecond, the years of neglect holding the spring tight, but Elena let out a secondary, desperate gasp of air and threw her entire shoulder weight onto the iron bar.

CLANG.

The mechanical valve turned a full ninety degrees. With a massive, violent hiss of compressed air, the courtroom's automated ventilation dampers instantly reversed, a powerful rush of cold, oxygen-rich mountain air blasting down from the roof-mounted intake units, clearing the thick Inergen gas matrix out through the corridor doors within ten seconds.

Elena lay on her back, flat on the concrete floorboards, sucking in the sweet, beautiful air, her chest heaving violently as her peripheral vision slowly stabilized from the black haze. Beside her, Sophie let out a sharp, ragged cough, her hazel eyes fluttering open as the fresh air returned the color to her pale cheeks.

"Elena..." the little girl whispered, her fingers still clutching the gray stuffed rabbit tightly against her chin. "Did the clipboard lady win?"

"No, baby," Elena said, pushing herself up using the mahogany desk leg for support, her gray eyes burning with a dangerous, unquenchable fire of pure professional resolve. "She didn't win. She just ran out of options. Officer Briggs! Are the local perimeters secure?"

Briggs was already on his feet near the judge's bench, his tactical flashlight painting a bright white beam down the open utility shaft doorway behind the mahogany pylon. "Negative, Ms. Brooks! The central security hub in the sub-basement has been electronically welded shut from the inside! The suspect cut the primary communication lines before she hit the utility doors! She’s moving internally through the old 1920s trolley transit matrix beneath the building's foundations!"

"The trolley tunnels," Elena said, her jaw clenching tightly as she checked her phone's network monitors. Her primary laptop terminal was dead, short-circuited by the Inergen gas deployment, but the localized data proxy she had linked to the navy binder's integrated smart-lock partition was still active. A single, pulsing red dot was moving quickly through a highlighted digital map of the city’s underground shipping canal structures, heading straight toward the central railway station two miles away.

"She took the binder because she thinks the physical hardware disks inside the lining are her only ticket out of the country," Elena said, turning to Judge Mercer, who was now straightening her reading glasses behind the bench, her face a hard mask of absolute judicial fury. "Your Honor, I need an immediate federal emergency warrant issued under the National Security Asset Seizure Act. If she reaches Platform Nine at the central transit hub before the state trooper escort can block the tracks, she’ll be on a private corporate transport vehicle heading toward Canada before dawn."

"The warrant is granted, Ms. Brooks," Judge Mercer said, her voice ringing out through the clearing smoke of the courtroom. "Officer Briggs, accompany the counsel. Use whatever force is legally necessary to secure that child's evidence core. Bring me Rachel Lawson in handcuffs."
