Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Titan

9

Three weeks after the raid on Hawthorne Manor, the fallout hit the global financial and political landscapes like a seismic shockwave.

The front page of The Wall Street Journal bore a massive, bold headline: DEFENSE CONTRACTOR VANGUARD GLOBAL EXPOSED IN PENTAGON CORRUPTION SCANDAL; FEDERAL INDICTMENTS ISSUED.

Across Washington, congressional hearings were hastily convened. The cascading data from Project Icarus—publicly released by the Department of Justice under direct pressure from Raymond’s legal team—revealed a sprawling, multi-billion-dollar illegal surveillance and autonomous drone program that had operated outside congressional oversight for over five years.

Vanguard Global Security’s executive leadership were arrested in coordinated early-morning raids across Virginia, Maryland, and Zurich. Their corporate assets were immediately frozen under federal RICO statutes, and their government defense contracts were terminated with prejudice.

At Hawthorne Global headquarters in Manhattan, the corporate restructuring was swift and absolute. Beatrice Hawthorne, stripped of her voting shares, board seats, and residency on the estate, had quietly retreated to a modest apartment in upstate New York, completely ostracized by high society and facing federal grand jury questioning for her role in aiding corporate espionage.

Raymond sat behind his sprawling executive desk on the fiftieth floor of the Hawthorne Tower, watching the morning commuters swarm across the bridges below.

The door opened quietly, and Elena walked into the office, holding a small thermos of coffee and a fresh stack of architectural blueprints.

"The foundation board just approved the funding for the Liam Hawthorne Memorial Aerospace Academy in upstate Ohio," Elena said softly, a warm, genuine smile gracing her face as she laid the blueprints across his desk. "It's a technical training school for underprivileged kids who want to build spacecraft and aircraft safely. Just like Liam always wanted."

Raymond looked down at the blueprints, tracing his fingers across the title block. A rare, gentle smile touched his lips.

"Good," Raymond said quietly. "Make sure the engineering wing is state-of-the-art. Spare no expense."

Elena leaned against the edge of the desk, looking out at the endless expanse of the Manhattan skyline stretching toward the Atlantic horizon. "You know, Raymond... for a long time, I thought this family was just about cold money, power, and iron control."

Raymond looked up, meeting her gaze with deep, unwavering warmth.

"Power isn't about control, Elena," Raymond said softly. "It's about knowing who you're willing to protect when the world tries to tear you apart."
