Chapter 12 - Breach at the Geneva Vault

12
The subterranean research vaults of the Hawthorne European Complex in Geneva were built to withstand a direct seismic earthquake, featuring three feet of reinforced titanium-alloy concrete and multi-layered quantum encryption locks. But tonight, those legendary security measures were being systematically dismantled from the inside out.
Inside the central control hub, emergency klaxons wailed in a rhythmic, deafening pulse, flashing a harsh crimson warning across rows of high-tech server racks.
Dr. Hans Keller, the lead quantum engineer overseeing the Hawthorne research facility, frantically slammed his fists onto his control console as the primary firewall crumbled line by line.
WARNING: BREACH DETECTED IN QUANTUM STORAGE VAULT SECTOR 7.
OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED BY EXTERNAL ENTITY.
"They're bypassing the biometric mainframe!" Keller shouted to his terrified junior technicians, who were scrambling to disconnect the manual power cables from the server banks. "Cut the secondary grid! Pull the master circuit breakers before they download the entire neural-net matrix!"
Before anyone could reach the master breaker box, the heavy steel security door of the control hub exploded inward in a blinding flash of shaped-charge breaching foam.
Through the billowing smoke stepped half a dozen heavily armored operatives wearing matte-black tactical gear bearing the unbadged insignia of Helvetia Prime Logistics. At their center strode General Marcus Vance, his trench coat damp from the rain, his face carved from cold, unyielding granite.
Dr. Keller stumbled backward, raising his hands in instinctive surrender as General Vance walked calmly up to the primary console.
"Doctor," General Vance greeted coldly, glancing at the flashing terminal screen. "I see you were about to make a terrible mistake."
"You... you have no authority here! This is a private Hawthorne Global research facility under international corporate sovereignty!" Keller stammered, his voice shaking with fear.
General Vance smiled—a thin, humorless smirk that didn't reach his eyes. "Sovereignty is a legal fiction invented for men who don't hold the keys to the kingdom. Open the quantum vault, Doctor. I've come to collect what belongs to the Department of Defense."
Keller swallowed hard, looking at the assault rifles pointed directly at his chest. With trembling fingers, he reached into his pocket, pulled out his master cryptographic keycard, and slotted it into the terminal reader.
The heavy titanium doors of Sector 7 hissed open, revealing a glowing, obsidian-cased quantum server core pulsing with a cold blue light—the true heart of Project Icarus.
General Vance stepped into the vault, staring at the core with predatory satisfaction. "Finally... the missing piece."

Suddenly, the control hub's emergency speakers crackled to life, overriding the blaring klaxons with a single, calm, terrifyingly familiar voice.
"General Vance," Raymond Hawthorne’s voice echoed through the subterranean facility, cold as winter ice. "You're trespassing."
