Chapter 9 - The Struggle at the Gate

-9

William Sterling’s grip on Emma’s uniform was iron-clad, a vice-like hold that left zero room for escape. As she hit the damp grass beneath the looming shadow of the perimeter wall, she spun around, throwing a desperate, blind punch that connected solidly with William’s jaw with a sickening thump.

The billionaire staggered backward, grunting in sudden shock and releasing his grip on her fabric as he stumbled against the trunk of a nearby oak tree.

"Go, Ethan! Run!" Emma screamed at the top of her lungs, looking up toward the top of the fence where the boy was currently struggling to squeeze his thin frame through the spiked barrier.

Ethan didn't hesitate. With a final, desperate heave, he slipped past the iron spikes, tumbled over the top of the twelve-foot brick perimeter wall, and dropped out of sight down onto the safe, public sidewalk of the Manhattan street below.

Seeing that the boy was finally out of the immediate compound, a massive wave of fierce, defiant relief washed over Emma. She turned back to face William, who was slowly straightening up, rubbing his jaw with one hand while his eyes burned with a dark, murderous fury.

"You absolute fool, Emma," William hissed, his voice dangerously low as he stepped toward her, towering over her petite frame. "You've ruined everything. Years of planning, millions of dollars in real estate, social standing—all jeopardized by a common, ungrateful housekeeper who doesn't know her place."

"You locked your own son in a hole to starve, William," Emma spat back, her voice shaking with righteous fury as she stood her ground, refusing to cower before the billionaire. "You're not a businessman. You're a coward and a monster. And everyone is going to know."

William let out a cold, humorless chuckle, taking another step forward, his hands flexing into tight fists. "And who is going to believe you, Emma? A disgraced maid with no money, no family, and no criminal record of employment anywhere outside of minimum-wage service? By sunrise, you won't even be a memory in this city."

Before William could lunge forward to grab her, the sharp, wailing shriek of approaching police sirens suddenly cut through the night air, echoing loudly down the residential street outside the estate walls.

William froze, his head snapping toward the sound. The wailing sirens were growing louder by the second, rapidly multiplying as multiple cruisers converged on their exact coordinates.

Emma didn't wait to see what would happen next. While William was momentarily distracted by the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the night sky above the wall, she lunged upward, grabbed the decorative iron scrollwork of the fence, hauled herself over the spikes with a final burst of desperate energy, and dropped safely down onto the concrete sidewalk beside Ethan.

"Emma!" Ethan cried out, throwing his arms around her waist as she hit the ground.

"I've got you, buddy. We're safe now," she panted, scooping him back up into her arms just as three marked NYPD squad cars rounded the corner with tires screeching, their blinding emergency lights illuminating the entire perimeter of the Sterling estate in a chaotic dance of crimson and azure.
