Chapter 6 - The Labyrinth of the Past

The historic service tunnel was an ancient relic of the nineteenth century, built long before the Sterling family acquired the property and turned it into a modern Manhattan architectural masterpiece. The air inside the brick-lined corridor was thick with the scent of damp earth, decaying mortar, and centuries of forgotten dust. Every step Emma took had to be calculated, her hands sweeping out in front of her to catch low-hanging wooden beams or protruding stone blocks before her face collided with them.
Ethan remained quiet in her arms, burying his face against her shoulder, his small body shivering not just from the lingering chill of the underground bunker, but from sheer, unadulterated terror.
"We're almost out, buddy," Emma whispered into the darkness, her voice sounding hollow and strained in the confined space. "Just keep holding on."
As they moved deeper into the labyrinth, a faint, pale stream of silver light began to filter through a series of narrow, high-set ventilation grates near the ceiling. The light wasn't electric; it was the natural, ethereal glow of the full moon shining down from the sprawling sculpture gardens above.
Emma squinted against the dim illumination, navigating the turns of the tunnel from memory. She knew this passage eventually led to the sub-basement of the historic carriage house, which sat nearly a hundred yards away from the main mansion. From there, an old, rusted iron service gate opened directly onto a quiet, tree-lined side street far away from the flashing lights and private security patrols of the charity gala.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic clanging echoed from somewhere behind them in the tunnel.
Emma froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She slowly turned her head back toward the darkness they had just traversed.
Clang. Scrape.
Someone had opened the hidden panel in the linen closet. Someone had entered the tunnel.
It wasn't Isabella's high heels this time. The footsteps were heavier, purposeful, and alarmingly fast. A man's stride.
William.
The horrifying realization crashed down on Emma with crushing weight. Isabella hadn't just been hunting them alone; she had alerted her billionaire husband, bringing the full, terrifying power of the master of the house into the hunt. William Sterling was now inside the tunnels, cutting off their retreat, turning their escape route into a literal hunting ground.
"Emma... who's that?" Ethan whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words.
"Hush, sweetie. Don't make a sound," Emma breathed back, her eyes frantically searching the walls for a place to hide.
Directly ahead of them, a rusted iron maintenance ladder bolted into the brick wall led upward toward a heavy, circular manhole cover set flush into the stone ceiling overhead. A faded stenciled sign next to the ladder read: EMERGENCY EXIT - GARDEN PATH.
It was their only chance. If they kept moving forward, William would inevitably cut them off at the carriage house. Their only option was to climb up right now, breaking out into the open grounds of the estate, and pray they could make it to the perimeter wall before being spotted by the estate's private security drones or patrols.

Without wasting another microsecond of hesitation, Emma rushed to the base of the iron ladder. She shifted Ethan’s weight, wrapping one of his frail arms securely around her neck while keeping her other hand free to grip the icy, rusted rungs.
She began to climb upward into the darkness, her muscles screaming in protest as she hauled their combined weight up the vertical shaft toward the surface, praying to God that the manhole cover wasn't bolted shut from the outside.
