Chapter 12 - Tearing Down the Walls

-12
The sun was fully breaking over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, golden beams across the manicured lawns of the Sterling estate as a specialized NYPD tactical and forensics unit swarmed the property. The grand ballroom, which just hours earlier had echoed with the carefree laughter and clinking champagne glasses of New York's elite, was now cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape.
Upstairs in the master suite, Isabella Sterling had been unceremoniously woken from her sleep. Dressed in a silk bathrobe, her perfect porcelain face twisted in a mask of furious indignation, she stood surrounded by armed officers as Detective Vance interrogated her without an ounce of professional courtesy.
"You are making a catastrophic mistake," Isabella hissed, her dark eyes flashing with venom as she glared at Vance. "William will strip you of your badge before breakfast. You have no idea who you're dealing with."
"Oh, I think I have a crystal-clear idea of who I'm dealing with, Mrs. Sterling," Vance replied evenly, not phased in the slightest by her threats. "We found the room behind the baroque painting on the service hallway. We found the digital keypad. And forensics is currently running biometric scans on the interior walls. It smells like a tomb in there, Isabella. How long did you plan to keep him down there? Until he stopped breathing?"
Isabella’s jaw tightened, her silence speaking volumes more than any denial ever could.
Down in the service hallway, a team of forensic engineers equipped with heavy-duty sledgehammers, thermal imaging scanners, and concrete saws went to work on the structural integrity of the hidden bunker.
CRASH. SMASH.
The heavy plaster and reinforced concrete behind the baroque painting were smashed away piece by piece, exposing the crude, amateurish wiring and ventilation shafts that Isabella had secretly installed without city permits or architectural approval. Every hidden camera feed, every recording device she had used to monitor the boy, and every drop of dark evidence was systematically cataloged and bagged by the crime scene techs.
Outside on the sidewalk, Emma sat in the back of an open ambulance wrapped in a warm thermal blanket, watching the chaos unfold inside the estate gates. Ethan was resting comfortably on the stretcher beside her, receiving IV fluids and oxygen while paramedics monitored his vital signs. The color was slowly beginning to return to the boy's cheeks, and for the first time in five days, he was sleeping peacefully, completely safe from the monsters who had tried to erase him.
Emma took a deep, shaky breath, letting the adrenaline finally drain out of her body, leaving behind a deep, aching exhaustion in her bones. She had started her shift last night as an invisible maid, carrying champagne glasses through a sea of untouchable billionaires who thought they owned the world.
Now, the world was watching them fall.
Detective Vance walked out from the main entrance of the mansion, pulling off his latex gloves and tossing them into a biohazard bin. He walked down the stone steps, crossed the lawn, and approached the open doors of the ambulance where Emma sat.
"Well, Emma," Vance said, offering her a tired, respectful nod. "We found the bunker. We found the boy's clothes, his fingerprints, and enough physical evidence to put both William and Isabella away for the rest of their natural lives. They're both in handcuffs in the back of a transport van right now."
Emma looked up at the detective, a heavy weight finally lifting off her chest. "And William?"
May you like
"William tried to claim he had no idea what Isabella was doing in his own house," Vance scoffed, shaking his head in disgust. "Unfortunately for him, our tech guys pulled the security server logs. William logged into the bunker's digital keypad system three times this week. He didn't just know about it, Emma. He was an active participant."
Justice, slow and heavy, had finally arrived.
