Chapter 2 - The Digital Lock

-2

The heavy steel door stood before Emma like an unbreachable wall, a stark, industrial intrusion into the historic charm of the Sterling estate. The dim amber glow from the hallway illuminated a small digital keypad mounted flush against the reinforced metal frame. A faint, rhythmic green light blinked slowly on the device, a tiny mechanical heartbeat waiting for a sequence that Emma did not possess.

She stared at the keypad, her breath catching in her throat. The muffled crying had stopped entirely, replaced by a suffocating, heavy stillness that felt infinitely more terrifying than the sound itself. Was Ethan in there? Was the young boy, the heir to the Sterling real estate empire, locked away in a dark, forgotten cavity of his own family home? And if so, what kind of monster had put him there? The image of Isabella’s serene, perfectly painted face flashed in Emma’s mind, her smiling lips parting to spread comforting lies to the staff while something unspeakable languished just inches away behind the bricks.

Emma reached out a trembling, gloved hand and hovered her fingers over the glowing buttons. She pressed a random sequence, praying to a god she hadn't prayed to in years for a miracle. BEEP. A harsh, electronic red light flashed angrily, and a sharp internal buzzer cut through the silence of the hallway like a knife.

Panic surged through her veins. The buzzer was too loud. If anyone from the ballroom—or worse, Isabella herself—heard that electronic shriek, Emma’s life would be forfeit. She yanked her hand back as if the keypad were burning hot, pressing her back flat against the exposed brick wall, holding her breath, and waiting for the heavy footsteps of security guards to round the corner.

Seconds ticked by like agonizing hours. The distant music from the ballroom continued to pulse through the floorboards, a cheerful, mocking soundtrack to a hidden nightmare. No footsteps came. The staff hallway remained stubbornly, hauntingly empty.

Slowly, Emma exhaled a shaky breath and stepped back toward the steel door. She needed a code. But how could she possibly guess a combination securing a secret prison built right into the walls of a billionaire's mansion? Her eyes scanned the surrounding area, searching desperately for any clue left behind in the hasty construction of this horrifying enclosure.

Her gaze dropped to the floorboards right beneath the baroque painting. Unlike the polished linoleum or rich mahogany found everywhere else in the estate, the floorboards here were slightly warped, showing signs of recent, hurried carpentry. Wedged deep into the narrow gap between the baseboard and the threshold was a tiny piece of crumpled white paper.

With shaking fingers, Emma crouched down, hooked her fingernail into the crevice, and pulled the paper free. She smoothed it out against her knee, squinting in the dim amber light. Written in rushed, jagged handwriting—a child's handwriting—were four numbers and a crude drawing of a smiling star.

0-8-1-4

Ethan's birthday. July fourteenth.

Emma’s heart skipped a beat. A nine-year-old child, trapped in the dark by his own stepmother, using his own birthday as a pathetic, secret beacon of hope, hoping against hope that someone—anyone—might eventually stumble upon his prison.

Without wasting another second, Emma stepped forward and punched the numbers into the keypad with rapid, precise movements.

0 - 8 - 1 - 4.

For a agonizing heartbeat, the keypad remained stubbornly red. Then, with a soft, pneumatic hiss that sounded like a sigh of relief, the red light shifted to a brilliant, solid green. A heavy internal click echoed through the metal, and the massive steel door slowly popped outward by an inch, releasing a thick wave of trapped, foul-smelling air that made Emma gag.

She gripped the cold steel edge of the door and pulled it open, plunging herself willingly into the absolute darkness that waited within.
