Chapter 5 - The Chase in the Shadows

The heavy metal fire door of the service stairwell slammed shut behind Emma with a thunderous, echoing bang that reverberated up through the concrete shaft. She didn't dare look back. Adrenaline surged through her bloodstream like liquid fire, supercharging her muscles as she hauled the emaciated weight of nine-year-old Ethan up the winding flight of stairs toward the third-floor staff quarters.
"Hold on to me tight, Ethan. Don't let go," Emma panted heavily, her lungs burning for oxygen as her legs screamed from the sudden exertion.
"I'm holding on, Emma... I'm scared," the boy whispered back, his voice weak and trembling against her neck.
"I know, sweet boy. I'm right here. We're going to make it," she lied, though her mind was racing in frantic, desperate circles.
She knew the estate layout better than anyone else on the staff. The grand staircases and main hallways were suicide; they were wide, open spaces completely exposed to security cameras and the wandering eyes of wealthy party guests. Her only chance—their absolute only lifeline—was the old servants' tunnel network that connected the main residential wing to the historic carriage house at the edge of the property. From there, they could slip through the overgrown perimeter hedges and reach the main road before anyone realized they were gone.
Emma burst through the heavy wooden door leading into the third-floor staff corridor. The hallway was quiet, dimly lit by wall sconces casting long, eerie shadows across the faded floral wallpaper. She sprinted down the corridor, her rubber shoes squeaking against the polished wood, heading straight toward the end of the hall where a heavy, unassuming linen closet hid the entrance to the maintenance shaft.
Behind her, echoing up from the stairwell, came the chilling, rhythmic sound of high heels clicking against concrete.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
Isabella wasn't running. She wasn't panicked. She was casually, methodically hunting them down, moving with the terrifying confidence of a predator who knew every single exit, every single dead end, and every single locked door in the entire estate. The psychological torture of the steady, unhurried footsteps was almost worse than a frantic sprint; it was designed to break their morale, to force a fatal mistake.
Emma reached the end of the hall, practically throwing herself against the door of the linen closet. She yanked it open, shoved aside towering stacks of clean, white folded sheets and heavy wool blankets, and fumbled frantically along the back wooden paneling until her fingers found a hidden brass latch.
She pulled the latch down with a sharp click. The entire back wall of the closet swung inward, revealing a dark, narrow brick tunnel stretching out into the damp subterranean gloom.
Without a second thought, Emma ducked her head, stepped into the dark passage, and pulled the wooden panel closed behind them just as the sound of Isabella’s high heels reached the far end of the hallway.
Total, suffocating darkness enveloped them. Emma stood frozen in the pitch-black tunnel, holding her breath, listening intently to the faint sounds filtering through the thick wood of the hidden door.
May you like
"Emma, dear..." Isabella’s sweet, musical voice echoed faintly through the panels, sounding uncomfortably close, as if she were speaking directly into Emma’s ear. "You can run through the old rat warrens all you like. But this is my house now. Every lock, every wall, every brick belongs to me. And sooner or later... you're going to run out of dark."
Emma felt a cold bead of sweat track slowly down her temple. She tightened her grip on Ethan, turned into the blackness of the tunnel, and began to blindly feel her way forward into the unknown depths of the estate.
