Chapter 6 - The Blackout Protocol

Word Count: 1049

The emergency red LED strips lining the baseboards of Blackwood Manor cast a hellish, crimson glow across the priceless oil paintings and mahogany wainscoting. The air was dead, heavy, and freezing cold as the climate control system remained offline, choked by an aggressive, high-level digital infiltration.

Victor Blackwood sprinted down the hallway, his boots pounding against the hardwood floor with terrifying speed, his Sig Sauer gripped tightly in both hands. His amber-green eyes scanned every shadow, every archway, every recessed doorway.

Sector four is compromised, he thought, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached. The network didn't just crash. Someone uploaded a localized override payload directly into the master terminal in the basement.

As he rounded the final corner leading to the master nursery wing, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from ahead.

Bang!

A heavy, custom-reinforced steel security shutter—designed to drop during a full-scale tactical assault—slammed downward from the ceiling of the corridor just ten feet in front of Victor, locking into the floor with a deafening crash. It completely sealed off the hallway, cutting off access to the nursery.

Victor skidded to a halt, slamming his hand against the cold steel shutter.

"Lily! Ethan!" Victor roared, his deep voice vibrating against the metal barrier.

No response came from the other side, save for the low, rhythmic hum of a digital receiver hidden somewhere behind the wainscoting.

Suddenly, a small, circular digital screen embedded in the center of the steel shutter flickered to life, glowing with a harsh, glaring white light. A distorted, electronically modulated voice spoke from the tiny speaker grille:

“Patience, Mr. Blackwood. Your son is entirely unharmed... for the moment. But if you attempt to override the shutter hydraulics with manual explosives, the blast radius will compromise the structural integrity of the nursery ceiling. I wouldn't recommend it.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed into lethal slits. He didn't waste time shouting. He pressed the barrel of his pistol directly against the digital screen, his finger resting lightly on the trigger.

"Who the hell are you?" Victor demanded, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal register. "And what do you want with my family?"

A synthetic, cold chuckle emanated from the speaker. “You spent years hunting syndicate bosses like Alistair Vance, Victor, believing you were the apex predator of the Chicago corporate underworld. But you never looked closely enough at the foundation beneath your feet. Alistair was just a distraction. A noisy pawn playing in a sandbox.”

"A pawn," Victor repeated, his mind racing through every major corporate merger, every rival conglomerate, every intelligence report from the past ten years. "If Alistair is a pawn... who is pulling the strings?"

“You’re about to find out,” the synthesized voice replied smoothly. “Step away from the shutter, Mr. Blackwood. Turn around, walk back down to the main foyer, and open the front doors. Your guest has arrived.”

Before Victor could answer, the circular screen blinked off, plunging the corridor back into eerie red darkness.

Miles away, the armored Blackwood transport van was racing down the highway toward the estate when Marcus Vance, sitting in the driver's seat, noticed his dashboard navigation map flashing erratically.

"Sir?" Marcus called into the encrypted comms channel, his voice tight with alarm. "Mr. Blackwood, do you copy? Our regional GPS relay just went offline. The entire estate grid is broadcasting a Level-9 emergency lockdown code!"

Static hissed through the speaker. No answer from Victor.

In the back of the van, Alistair Vance—who had been sitting in stoic silence with his handcuffs locked to the floor—suddenly raised his head. A slow, terrifying smile spread across his thin lips. He began to laugh—a low, quiet chuckle that made the hairs on the back of Marcus’s neck stand up.

"What are you laughing at, Vance?" Marcus snarled, glancing in the rearview mirror.

"You thought Victor captured me, Marcus," Alistair said, his voice dripping with triumphant amusement. "You thought bringing me to Blackwood Manor was going to be your masterstroke. But you walked right into the spider's web."

"Shut your mouth!" Marcus slammed on the brakes, pulling the van to a screeching halt on the deserted highway shoulder, turning around with his hand resting on his tactical sidearm. "What are you talking about?!"

"I'm talking about the fact that Alistair Vance was never the head of Titan Global," a new voice chimed in from the darkest corner of the van.

Marcus froze. He whipped his head around.

Sitting quietly in the shadows behind the bench seat—unnoticed in the dim light of the transit van—was a man wearing a crisp, dark grey tailored suit, his face obscured by a sleek, matte-black surgical mask. He wasn't handcuffed. In fact, resting casually in his lap was a heavy-duty military-grade master override console, its screen glowing with the exact same Level-9 estate lockdown code currently locking Victor Blackwood out of the nursery.

Marcus drew his weapon instantly, aiming it straight at the masked stranger's chest. "Who the hell are you?! Hands where I can see them!"

The masked man didn't flinch. He slowly raised his hands, a faint, metallic clinking sound coming from his cuffs as he pressed a button on the override console.

"Put the gun down, Marcus," the masked man said, his voice entirely natural, smooth, and chillingly familiar. "Unless you want the structural charges inside Blackwood Manor to detonate before I've even had a chance to say hello to my dear brother."

Marcus’s blood ran cold. The pistol wavered in his hand. Brother?

Back at the estate, Victor Blackwood stood alone in the red-lit hallway before the sealed steel shutter. Knowing he couldn't force his way through without risking Ethan’s safety, he spun on his heel and began sprinting back toward the grand foyer, exactly as the mysterious voice had instructed.

He reached the heavy oak front doors of Blackwood Manor, grabbed the brass handle, and flung them wide open into the cold, stormy night.

Standing on the threshold, drenched in rain, stood a single figure clad in a dark grey suit, holding a silver umbrella. As the lightning flashed across the sky, illuminating the stranger's face, Victor staggered backward, his breath catching in his throat in absolute, paralyzing shock.
