Chapter 3 - The Broken Alibi

The artificial fluorescent lights of the East Wing holding vault buzzed with a low, irritating hum that seemed to drill directly into Serena Vance’s skull. She sat on the edge of the stiff cot, her arms wrapped tightly around her shivering frame, staring blankly at the heavy steel door.
Hours had passed since the guards had thrown her into the concrete cell. No food had been brought. No water. Just the suffocating isolation and her own burning, blistering rage.
Victor thinks he can break me, she thought, her fingernails digging deep into her forearms. He thinks a basement cell and a confiscated diamond ring are enough to stop Titan Global.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic clink echoed from the heavy steel door.
Serena bolted upright, her eyes locking onto the small sliding observation slot at eye level. The iron latch lifted slowly, and a pair of cold, piercing eyes peered into the dim cell. It wasn't one of Victor’s massive tactical guards. It was Clara, the senior housemaid who had betrayed her in the foyer the night before.
Clara looked around nervously down the empty corridor before sliding a small, heavy brass key through the bottom gap of the door.
Serena stared at the key in absolute astonishment, then rushed across the concrete floor, snatching it up from the ground. She inserted it into the heavy deadbolt with trembling fingers. With a muffled mechanical click, the lock gave way.
She pushed the heavy steel door open an inch, peering out into the dimly lit service corridor. It was completely deserted.
"Clara?" Serena hissed, grabbing the maid’s wrist through the crack in the door, her voice a mix of fury and desperate confusion. "What is the meaning of this? Are you playing some kind of sick game with me?"
Clara pulled her wrist away, her eyes wide with unfeigned terror. "I'm not playing games, Miss Serena. Mr. Blackwood left the estate an hour ago for an emergency board meeting in the city. The night shift security detail is rotating right now. If you want to get out alive... you need to run."
Serena narrowed her eyes, suspicion instantly flaring in her chest. "Run? Why would you help me? You’re the one who stabbed me in the back during Clara’s little confession last night."
"Because Mr. Blackwood is a monster when he finds out someone crossed him," Clara whispered, her voice cracking with emotion. "He... he talked about sending you to a psychiatric facility in Switzerland where nobody would ever find you. I have a daughter, Miss Serena. I know what it’s like to be trapped by powerful men. Here—take this."
Clara reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a sleek, matte-black smartphone along with a leather pouch containing a thick roll of hundred-dollar bills and a keycard stamped with the Blackwood Industries corporate seal.
"That's Mr. Blackwood’s secondary secure phone," Clara whispered urgently. "It has an encrypted satellite connection. And the keycard will unlock the executive elevator at the South Gate helipad. If you hurry, you can catch the 3:00 AM freight chopper to the downtown terminal."
Serena snatched the phone and the keycard from Clara’s hands, a triumphant, wicked smirk slowly spreading across her tear-stained face. The fool. Victor actually thought he could lock her up and throw away the key, only to have his own terrified staff betray him out of cowardice.
"You're making the right choice, Clara," Serena purred, stepping out of the cell and smoothing down the rumpled grey wool blanket around her shoulders like a queen adjusting a royal robe. "When Alistair Vance takes over Blackwood Industries next week, I will make sure you are richly rewarded."
Without waiting for a reply, Serena turned and sprinted down the service corridor toward the South Gate elevators, her bare feet padding silently against the concrete floor.
What Serena didn't know—what she couldn't possibly have known—was that exactly three floors above her, sitting in the private executive monitoring room in total darkness, Victor Blackwood and Marcus Vance were watching her every move on a crystal-clear, high-definition quad-screen display.
Marcus stared at the monitor, watching Serena snatch the phone and sprint toward the South Gate exit. He turned his head slowly to look at Victor, who sat calmly in a leather armchair, swirling a fresh glass of scotch.
"She took the bait, sir," Marcus said, his voice laced with cautious awe. "Clara dropped the decoy phone and the forged keycard right on schedule. Serena thinks she staged a brilliant escape."
Victor took a slow sip of his scotch, his amber-green eyes fixed on the monitor where Serena’s frantic figure disappeared into the elevator shaft.
"Desperation is a blind spot, Marcus," Victor said quietly, a cold, hard edge to his tone. "A smart operative would have questioned why a loyal housemaid risked her entire livelihood to help her escape. But Serena’s ego is too massive. She genuinely believes she is smarter than everyone in this room."
"And the decoy phone?" Marcus asked, pulling up a diagnostic terminal on his desk. "We planted the encrypted tracking beacon inside the battery casing?"
"Of course," Victor replied without hesitation. "Every text message she sends, every phone call she makes, and every GPS coordinate she transmits to Alistair Vance will route directly through our secure servers. We will watch her walk right into Titan Global’s Chicago headquarters."
"What about Lily and Ethan?" Marcus asked, his expression softening slightly. "They're still in the master wing. Should we relocate them to a secure safe house while this operation is in motion?"
Victor’s face tightened noticeably at the mention of his son. The memory of Serena dragging the toddler across the marble floor flashed behind his eyelids, sending a surge of primal protectiveness through his veins.
"No," Victor answered firmly. "The estate is locked down tighter than a nuclear silo. The inner perimeter is guarded by our most trusted men, and I have personally stationed Lily outside the nursery with a direct panic link to my comms. Anyone who tries to breach this house will not leave alive."
Marcus nodded grimly, turning back to his keyboards as lines of digital code began scrolling across the screen, tracking Serena’s rapid ascent toward the South Gate helipad.
"She's boarding the freight chopper now, sir," Marcus announced a moment later. "Destination: Titan Global downtown tower. The trap is officially sprung."
Victor stood up slowly from his armchair, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling windows of the monitoring room. Outside, the pre-dawn darkness hung heavy over the sprawling Blackwood estate, a silent fortress guarding its secrets.

He raised his glass in a silent, solitary toast to the night sky.
Run, Serena, Victor thought, a dangerous, razor-sharp smile touching his lips. Run straight to your master. Because the moment you arrive, the war for Blackwood Industries begins.
