Chapter 12 - The Bait is Set

The financial news networks across Wall Street, London, and Tokyo flashed urgent breaking headlines just before the closing bell: Blackwood Industries Announces Sudden Emergency Liquidation of Primary Family Trust Amid Unprecedented Federal Audit.
Inside the glass-walled executive suite of Blackwood Manor, Victor Blackwood watched the global stock ticker tumble slightly before stabilizing, a masterpiece of controlled corporate theater. On the master terminal before him, encrypted dark-web traffic monitors spiked dramatically.
The bait had been swallowed whole.
"The Aegis Maritime platform in Nova Scotia just altered its heading," Marcus reported, his fingers flying across the tactical keyboard as he tracked satellite telemetry. "They’ve deployed two high-speed stealth interceptor boats carrying a twelve-man tactical insertion team. ETA to the private shoreline of our estate: 02:00 hours."
Victor adjusted his dark grey tactical sweater, slipping his Sig Sauer P226 into his shoulder holster with a smooth, practiced motion. "Are the perimeter thermal tripwires armed and set to non-lethal stun mode?"
"Set, tested, and active," Marcus nodded. "We’ll let them breach the outer perimeter wall and cross the lower gardens completely unopposed. Once they step onto the terrace outside the main conservatory, the automated security shutters will lock them in a titanium cage."
Victor walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the moonlit lawns of the estate. The night was eerily quiet, the autumn wind rustling the ancient oak trees that lined the property. It was hard to believe that behind the pristine beauty of the gardens lay a high-tech fortress designed to trap an ancient shadow syndicate.
"What about the mole within our network?" Victor asked quietly, keeping his eyes on the tree line. "Arthur Sterling’s legacy didn't survive thirty years in the dark without someone on the inside feeding them real-time intel."
Marcus paused, his fingers freezing over the keys. He slowly turned around, his expression grim. "We ran a deep forensic trace on all internal administrative logins from the past forty-eight hours. Every security bypass code used by the Syndicate traces back to a single terminal inside the manor."
Victor’s eyes narrowed. "Which terminal?"
"The secure executive terminal in your late father’s private archive room," Marcus said tightly. "The only person with biometric clearance for that room, aside from you, was... Clara."
Victor let out a slow, heavy breath. Clara—the loyal housemaid of fourteen years whose daughter had graduated on a Blackwood Foundation scholarship. Or so they had thought.
"Clara’s daughter never went to Stanford," Victor realized with chilling clarity, the pieces of the puzzle snapping together. "The scholarship records were forged. Clara isn't a frightened servant; she’s an operative planted by Arthur Sterling's network over two decades ago."
"She’s currently stationed in the East Wing service pantry, sir," Marcus reported, drawing his sidearm. "Shall I detain her?"
"No," Victor held up a hand, stopping him. "Let her play her part. If we arrest her now, the extraction team will abort before they reach the trap. Let her believe her handlers are winning until the steel doors drop."
Down in the subterranean safe room, Lily sat cradling little Ethan, who was fast asleep against her chest. She watched the live security feeds on the wall monitor, her heart pounding against her ribs as she saw Clara walking casually down the East Wing corridor, tapping codes into her encrypted communicator.
Lily felt a wave of intense anger mixed with fear. For years, Clara had smiled at her in the hallways, shared quiet cups of coffee in the kitchen, and pretended to care for the household—all while quietly plotting to hand the family over to an invisible syndicate.

Not on my watch, Lily thought fiercely, gently kissing Ethan’s forehead. Victor is going to protect us.
As the digital clock on the command wall ticked toward 01:50 AM, the final countdown began. The Aegis Maritime tactical team was closing in on the shore, entirely unaware that they were walking straight into a meticulously engineered cage. The Sovereign Syndicate was about to learn that some bloodlines cannot be bought, sold, or repossessed.
