Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ledgers

The subterranean holding facility in the East Wing of Blackwood Manor was a stark, windowless vault designed years ago for secure document storage and high-level corporate crises. Now, it served as Serena Vance’s private prison.
Stripped of her designer clothes, her jewelry, and her phone, Serena sat shivering on a stiff cot in the corner of the concrete cell, wrapped only in a coarse grey wool blanket. Her manicured fingernails were caked with dirt from her frantic attempts to pry open the heavy steel door. Her hair hung in matted tangles around her face, and her eyes were wild, bloodshot, and burning with a furious, unhinged desire for revenge.
"Victor... you arrogant bastard," she hissed into the damp air, her voice cracking as she paced the small perimeter of the cell. "You think you've won? You think locking me in a basement stops what's coming?"
Upstairs in the executive study, however, Victor Blackwood was facing a crisis far more complex than a disgraced fiancée.
The heavy mahogany doors of the study were locked from the inside. Spread across the massive oak desk were hundreds of printed financial statements, wire transfer logs, and encrypted corporate audits that Marcus Vance—Victor’s fiercely loyal head of corporate security and intelligence—had spent the last twelve hours compiling.
Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out into the misty expanse of the estate gardens, holding a glass of amber scotch. The amber liquid remained untouched, warming his palm while his mind raced through a labyrinth of betrayal.
"Talk to me, Marcus," Victor said without turning around, his voice deep and measured. "Give me the bottom line."
Marcus stepped forward from the shadows of the bookshelf, adjusting his gold-rimmed spectacles. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes bearing testament to a sleepless night of digital forensics.
"It’s worse than we initially feared, sir," Marcus began, his voice grim. "When you ordered the preliminary background check on Serena Vance prior to the engagement, her profile looked like standard aristocratic debt—high lifestyle expenses, failed family businesses, living off dwindling trust funds. But when we cracked the encrypted partition on the flash drive found in her personal vanity case this morning... everything changed."
Victor turned slowly, setting his glass down on the windowsill with a sharp clink. "Go on."
"Serena wasn't just a socialite looking for a wealthy husband," Marcus explained, tapping a stylus against a digital tablet. "She was planted. Six months before you met her at the charity gala in Geneva, her debts—totaling nearly four million dollars—were entirely wiped clean by a shell corporation named Vanguard Holdings. And Vanguard Holdings is a direct subsidiary of Titan Global Logistics."
Victor’s eyes narrowed instantly. The name struck a raw nerve. Titan Global Logistics was Blackwood Industries’ primary global competitor—a ruthless conglomerate run by a shadowy, reclusive billionaire named Alistair Vance, a man known for hostile takeovers, corporate espionage, and ruthless corporate sabotage.
"Vanguard," Victor murmured, tasting the word like poison on his tongue. "Alistair Vance is using Serena to infiltrate my household? To get close to Ethan?"
"Not just Ethan, sir," Marcus corrected grimly, pulling up a secondary spreadsheet on the main monitor. "Look at the wire transfers executed from Serena’s personal accounts over the past three months. While she was playing the doting fiancée upstairs in the master wing, she was systematically siphoning encrypted source code from Blackwood Industries’ research and development servers. She used a hardware keylogger plugged directly into your private study terminal while you were asleep."
Victor stared at the screen, a cold, hard rage settling deep into his bones. Every late-night meeting, every gesture of affection, every smile she had given him—it had all been an elaborate, calculated deception designed to hollow out his empire from the inside.
"She wanted to destroy Blackwood Industries from the foundation up," Victor said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register. "And my son was just insurance in case I caught on too early."
"What do you want to do with her, sir?" Marcus asked cautiously. "Do we hand her over to federal authorities? Or do we let the SEC handle the insider trading charges?"
Victor walked slowly back to his desk, picking up the small digital recorder that had exposed Serena’s cruelty in the foyer just hours before. He turned it over in his hand, feeling its cold metallic casing.
"Federal authorities move too slowly, Marcus," Victor replied, a dangerous glint appearing in his amber-green eyes. "And an SEC investigation creates public panic that Alistair Vance can exploit on the stock market. If Serena wants to play a high-stakes game of corporate espionage for Titan Global Logistics, we are going to use her as our own Trojan horse."
Marcus blinked in surprise, leaning forward. "A Trojan horse, sir? How?"
"We feed her false information," Victor declared, leaning his hands flat against the mahogany desk. "We let her escape."
Marcus stared at his boss as if he had lost his mind. "Escape, Mr. Blackwood? With all due respect, if she gets back to Alistair Vance, she will hand over whatever remaining intel she has, and Titan Global will strike our shipping lanes before the end of the week."
"She won't escape on her own, Marcus," Victor smiled—a cold, humorless expression that sent a chill down the security chief's spine. "We are going to make sure she thinks she outsmarted us. We’ll leave a backdoor open in the East Wing vault, scatter a few falsified research files on our next-generation semiconductor project, and let her run straight back to her handlers."
Marcus stood in silence for a long moment, processing the sheer audacity of the plan. Slowly, an understanding dawned on his face, and a grim smile touched the corners of his mouth.
"You want to draw Alistair Vance out into the open," Marcus said, his voice dropping with realization.
"Exactly," Victor nodded, standing tall. "Alistair has been hiding behind his corporate shell companies and proxies for years. If he wants my company, and if he sent Serena to destroy my family, I am going to invite him to the slaughter."

Down in the damp concrete holding vault, Serena Vance was pacing furiously near the heavy steel door, unaware that her supposed prison sentence was about to become the very weapon Victor Blackwood would use to crush her masters.
Little did Victor know, however, Alistair Vance was already three steps ahead. And the trap they were preparing to spring was about to snap shut on both of them in ways neither man could possibly anticipate.
