Chapter 9 - THE CONFESSION ROOM

The winter storm clouds finally broke over the city, casting pale, golden twilight through the shattered glass dome of the Caruso estate's grand conservatory. The mercenaries had been neutralized, the fires extinguished, and the surviving sleeper agents rounded up by Viktor’s loyal security detail before they could reach the property lines. Down in the subterranean medical wing, a private pediatrician brought in under armed guard finished examining Leah, confirming that aside from mild exhaustion and emotional shock, the little girl was completely unharmed. Now, wrapped in a warm pink blanket, Leah was sleeping peacefully in Elena’s arms as they sat in the quiet sanctuary of the conservatory, surrounded by blooming orchids and the soft splash of the central marble fountain.
Damian stood a few feet away, leaning against a stone pillar with a cigarette burning slowly between his fingers—a rare vice he only indulged in when the world had nearly ended. He watched them with a softened expression, the brutal underworld kingpin completely melted away by the simple, miraculous reality of having his family breathing and whole under the same roof. The door to the conservatory opened softly, and Viktor stepped inside, holding a secure encrypted tablet. "Marcus is awake," Viktor reported quietly, his voice neutral. "He’s being held in the lower holding cells. He’s asking to speak with you directly, Boss. Says he has one final piece of information to trade before the federal marshals arrive to pick him up."
Damian stubbed out the cigarette in a stone planter, his jaw hardening. He looked at Elena, silently asking for permission with his eyes. Elena nodded slowly, shifting Leah slightly in her arms. "Go," she whispered. "Finish it." Damian walked out of the conservatory, his boots echoing against the marble floor as he descended deep into the lower levels of the estate where the original medieval foundations met modern security architecture. The holding cells were cold, damp, and isolated from the rest of the mansion. Marcus Vance sat handcuffed to a stainless-steel chair bolted to the concrete floor, his expensive suit ruined, his face bruised from where Damian had struck him in the penthouse boardroom earlier that day.

As Damian stepped into the harsh fluorescent glare of the cell, Marcus looked up, a pathetic, bloodied smirk twisting his lips. "You really love her, don't you?" Marcus rasped, his voice dry and cracked. "The waitress from the diner. You're actually willing to tear down your entire empire for a woman you knew for one summer twelve years ago." Damian stepped up to the table, leaning down until his face was inches from Marcus’s. "You didn't just steal my money or my territory, Marcus," Damian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "You stole a mother's child. You tortured an innocent baby with psychological isolation just to keep a leash on me. You are nothing. A parasite wearing a tailored suit." Marcus let out a bitter, rattling laugh, shaking his head. "You think I acted alone, Damian? You think I was the mastermind behind the Zurich clinic?"
Damian’s eyes narrowed instantly. "What are you talking about?" Marcus leaned forward as far as the handcuffs would allow, his eyes shining with a mad, desperate triumph. "St. Jude’s Memorial wasn't funded by my accounts alone. I was just the local manager. The real money—the global syndicate that authorized the child-trafficking rings and the medical experiments across Europe—they're still out there. And they know who Leah is. They know she carries the genetic markers of the only family line that ever successfully resisted their corporate takeovers." Marcus paused, coughing up a drop of blood before flashing a terrifying grin. "You think you won tonight, Damian? You just brought the target right into the center of your living room. They won't stop coming for her. Never."
