Chapter 6 - THE WESTERN BREACH

-2-

Back at the Caruso estate, the subterranean command center’s massive digital displays flashed bright crimson as automated klaxons began to wail through the reinforced concrete corridors. Viktor’s elite secondary detail—four heavily armed security guards left behind to secure the perimeter—scrambled through the armory, grabbing assault rifles and donning ceramic body armor. In the upstairs nursery, the sudden, shrill shriek of the security klaxons startled Leah awake. The toddler let out a terrified wail, burying her face into Elena’s shoulder as the heavy oak door rattled under the vibration of distant explosions echoing from the perimeter walls.

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She didn't know what was happening, but her maternal instincts screamed louder than any alarm. She scooped Leah up, wrapping her securely in the baby carrier against her chest, and grabbed a heavy iron poker from the fireplace in the adjoining master suite. "Stay with me, baby," Elena whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to Leah’s trembling forehead as she locked the nursery door from the inside and shoved a heavy oak dresser across the threshold to block it. Through the thick glass of the reinforced windows overlooking the western gardens, she saw the dark, billowing smoke rising from the gatehouse. Men in tactical black uniforms—mercenaries completely unrelated to Damian’s regular staff—were swarming over the electrified perimeter fences like ants, neutralizing the automated defense turrets with EMP devices.

The internal comms panel mounted on the wall crackled to life, hissing with static before Viktor’s voice broke through, tight and strained. "Elena! Listen to me very carefully. The biometric locks have been overridden from an external terminal. Marcus had a secondary sleeper cell embedded in our engineering team. They are coming up through the service elevator shaft directly beneath the west wing. You need to get out of the nursery now!" Elena’s breath hitched. "Where do I go? The stairs are on the west wing!" "Use the panic tunnel," Viktor barked over the gunfire echoing in the background. "There’s a reinforced shelter built behind the bookshelf in Damian’s study. The keypad code is your daughter’s birthdate. Get in there and lock the steel bulkhead behind you!"

Elena didn't hesitate. She threw her weight against the heavy dresser, shoving it aside just enough to wrench the nursery door open. The hallway outside was dead silent, the soft carpets absorbing the sound of her frantic footsteps as she sprinted toward Damian’s private study at the opposite end of the corridor. As she reached the double doors of the study, the distinct sound of heavy boots stomping up the main staircase echoed from the floor below. They were already inside the mansion. She burst into the study, slamming the heavy oak doors shut and throwing the deadbolt. Rushing over to the massive mahogany bookshelves lining the back wall, she frantically searched for the hidden seam Viktor had described.

There it was—a subtle brass lever carved into the molding of a rare volume on European history. She pulled it down with all her weight. With a heavy, pneumatic hiss, a section of the bookshelf swung inward, revealing a pitch-black concrete corridor descending into the bowels of the estate. Elena didn't look back. She plunged into the darkness, her hands guiding her along the cold concrete walls as she felt for the digital keypad embedded in the reinforced steel bulkhead door at the bottom of the short flight of stairs. Her fingers shook violently as she punched in Leah’s birthdate—four digits that represented the exact day her stolen life had been torn apart, and the day it had miraculously begun again.

BEEP. A green light flashed on the keypad. The heavy steel bulkhead door unlatched with a loud, pneumatic click, swinging open just as the sound of splintering wood echoed from the study upstairs. Someone had just kicked Damian’s heavy oak doors off their hinges. Elena dove into the underground bunker, grabbing the heavy steel wheel on the inside of the bulkhead and spinning it frantically to seal the vault shut just as a hail of gunfire peppered the outer concrete walls. Locked in pitch-black darkness, holding a weeping toddler against her chest, Elena listened to the muffled sounds of boots stomping through the study above her, realizing with chilling certainty that the war for her family had only just begun.
