Chapter 5 - THE PENTHOUSE CONFRONTATION

The executive boardroom fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence. The glass shards from the security breach crunched beneath the heavy boots of Viktor’s tactical squad as they rapidly secured the perimeter, forcing the terrified board members back against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Lake Michigan. Marcus Vance rose slowly from his leather chair at the head of the table, his face instantly draining of color, though he quickly forced a tight, artificial smile to mask his panic. "Damian," Marcus said smoothly, spreading his hands in a gesture of false camaraderie. "What a pleasant surprise. We were just discussing the quarterly restructuring. You really shouldn't have troubled yourself to come down here; we had everything handled."
Damian walked into the center of the boardroom with slow, deliberate steps, his tailored coat parting slightly to reveal the custom holster strapped to his chest. He didn't say a word. He simply stared at Marcus with a gaze so heavy and devoid of human warmth that several board members instinctively turned away, terrified of being caught in the crossfire. Damian reached inside his jacket, pulled out a thick manila folder—the Zurich dossier compiled by Viktor—and hurled it across the polished mahogany table. The folder skidded past half-full coffee cups and stopped directly against Marcus’s chest. "Open it, Marcus," Damian commanded, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register that vibrated through the glass walls of the penthouse.
Marcus’s hands trembled slightly as he reached down and flipped open the cover. His eyes darted across the photocopied wire transfer receipts from Swiss bank accounts, the illicit medical licenses of St. Jude’s Memorial Clinic, and the signed adoption affidavits bearing his own signature from twelve years ago. The artificial smile dissolved completely, replaced by a mask of cold, trapped realization. "This... this is forged," Marcus stammered, though his voice lacked any genuine conviction. "Circumstantial garbage put together by disgruntled rivals trying to destabilize the syndicate." Damian let out a short, humorless bark of laughter that sounded more like a gunshot. "Forged? The Swiss banking commission doesn't deal in forged ledgers, Marcus. Neither does the federal prosecutor’s office, which currently has copies of these exact documents sitting on their desks as we speak."
Panic finally broke through Marcus’s polished exterior. He slammed his palms down onto the table, leaning forward with a snarl of desperation. "You arrogant bastard! You think you can just march in here and tear down what I built while you were sitting in your mansion mourning a ghost? I kept this syndicate afloat while you were losing your mind over a dead fiancée and a mute brat!" The moment the words left Marcus’s mouth, the temperature in the boardroom dropped to absolute zero. Every single person in the room stopped breathing. Damian closed the distance between them with terrifying speed, grabbing Marcus by the silk lapels of his expensive suit and hauling him bodily across the mahogany table, slamming him against the wood with a force that rattled the crystal water pitchers.

"Say her name again," Damian whispered, pressing the barrel of his hidden pistol firmly against Marcus’s ribs beneath the fabric of the suit. "Go on, Marcus. Call her a brat again." Marcus choked for air, his hands clawing uselessly at Damian’s iron wrists, the absolute terror of death finally shining in his eyes. "I didn't hurt her," Marcus gasped, coughing as the breath was forced from his lungs. "I swear to God, I didn't hurt the kid! She was just insurance—a backup plan in case you ever decided to step down. I placed her mother in that restaurant on purpose, just to see what would happen if the bloodlines collided. It was an experiment!" Damian’s finger tightened on the trigger, the hammer cocking back with a sharp, echoing click that made the nearby board members cover their ears in terror.
Before Damian could pull the trigger, the encrypted radio clipped to Viktor’s tactical vest suddenly crackled to life with a frantic, broken voice. "Command center to Boss—we have an active breach at the estate! Repeat, perimeter sensors are tripping all along the western fence line. Multiple uninvited units—they're bypassing the biometric locks!" Damian froze, his eyes locked on Marcus’s terrified face. The realization hit him like a lightning bolt: Marcus hadn't acted alone. There was a second wave, a secondary failsafe designed to target the estate the moment Damian left the premises. And right inside that estate, completely vulnerable behind compromised security walls, were Elena and Leah.
