Chapter 7 - THE SCORCHED EARTH

-2-

Down in the subterranean command center, the monitors flickered violently as the secondary cell systematically sliced through the estate’s main power grid. Viktor Vance stood over the central console, firing a customized submachine gun through the reinforced glass of the control room door as three black-clad mercenaries attempted to breach the lower levels. Brass casings rained onto the concrete floor in a chaotic dance, mixing with the acrid smell of gunpowder and burning electrical insulation. "Hold the line!" Viktor roared into his tactical headset, his shoulder stained with blood from a grazing round. "Do not let them reach the lower vaults!"

Meanwhile, fifty floors above the city streets in the Caruso Global Tower, Damian stood over Marcus Vance like a grim reaper. The phone in Damian’s hand was pressed tightly against his ear, listening to the dead air coming from the estate’s severed comms network. The sudden radio silence from Viktor and the security detail sent a surge of lethal adrenaline through Damian’s veins that completely eclipsed his previous composure. He looked down at Marcus, who was still pinned across the boardroom table, bleeding slightly from a split lip. "Your little backup plan just triggered," Damian said softly, his voice dead and terrifyingly calm. Marcus let out a cracked, hysterical laugh, blood staining his teeth. "You're too late, Damian... the cell I activated isn't here to negotiate. They're here to burn your entire legacy to ash, starting with the waitress and the brat."

Damian didn't waste another second on words. He brought the butt of his heavy Sig Sauer pistol down across Marcus’s temple with blinding speed, sending the traitor crashing unconscious onto the boardroom floor in a heap of shattered glass and expensive silk. Damian spun on his heel, gesturing sharply to his remaining tactical detail. "Clear the roof! Get the chopper prepped for immediate departure—we are flying direct to the estate!" As Damian sprinted toward the private penthouse helipad, the wind whipped his coat around his legs like the wings of a dark angel. The city stretched out below him in a blur of gray concrete and winter frost, but his entire universe had shrunk down to a single, burning coordinate: his home, and the two lives he had sworn to protect with his dying breath.

Back at the estate, inside the pitch-black underground bunker, Elena fumbled along the emergency supply shelf until her fingers brushed against a heavy tactical flashlight. She clicked it on, the bright LED beam cutting through the dust and casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete walls of the secure shelter. The bunker was fully stocked with emergency rations, medical supplies, and a secondary communications console linked directly to a satellite uplink independent of the mansion's main grid. Leah had finally stopped crying, her small, exhausted body curled up against Elena’s chest as she drifted into a fitful sleep from sheer emotional overload. Elena gently set her down on a narrow cot lined with wool blankets, tucking a spare jacket around her shoulders before turning her attention to the communications console.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, typing a manual override sequence to activate the bunker’s internal surveillance feed. A small, grainy monitor flickered to life, showing the interior of Damian’s study upstairs. Two black-clad mercenaries were tearing the room apart, smashing bookcases, kicking over furniture, and searching frantically for the hidden panic room entrance. One of them, a massive brute with a tactical knife gripped between his teeth, knelt down right beside the hidden bookshelf seam, pressing his ear against the concrete panel. Elena held her breath, her hand flying over her mouth to muffle the sound of her own heartbeat. The brute muttered something into his shoulder mic, standing up and raising an explosive breaching charge toward the reinforced steel bulkhead door separating them from safety. They found the entrance.
