Chapter 2 - The Unexpected Guest-2

The heavy wooden front door didn't just open; it creaked wide under the weight of authority. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed down the grand marble hallway, approaching the dining room.
Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the stack of paper from the silver tray and attempting to tear it in half. But the paper was high-grade, bound legal stock; it resisted his frantic, sweaty fingers. In his desperation, he tried to shove the USB drive into his pocket, but his hands were shaking so violently that he dropped it onto the floor, where it rolled harmlessly toward my feet. I stepped on it lightly with the heel of my shoe.
"Daniel! Do something!" Gloria shrieked, backing away from the table as if the papers themselves were contagious. "Call our attorney! Call Charles immediately!"
"Charles won't be answering your calls, Gloria," a sharp, composed female voice called out from the dining room entryway.
Everyone turned.
Standing in the doorway was Detective Sarah Miller, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Division. But it wasn't the police officers that made Daniel drop the papers entirely.
It was the woman standing directly behind Detective Miller.
She was dressed in an elegant beige trench coat, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, professional chignon. She carried a leather briefcase in her left hand and wore a expression of quiet, lethal satisfaction.
It was Chloe. My former assistant. Daniel’s mistress.
Daniel’s jaw dropped. "Chloe? What... what are you doing with them? What is this?"
Chloe didn't flinch under his gaze. She took two steps into the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. "I'm executing my cooperation agreement with the state, Daniel. Just like we planned."
"You traitorous little whore!" Vanessa spat out, stepping toward Chloe with her nails claws outstretched. "Daniel paid for your apartment! He bought you that car!"
"With my money," I chimed in smoothly, stepping between Vanessa and Chloe. "Daniel didn't pay for anything. Every dollar he gave Chloe came directly from the commercial real estate account he thought he was embezzling unnoticed. Except Chloe wasn't working for him. She was working for me."
Gloria stared at Chloe, then at me, her mind failing to process the betrayal. "You... you knew?"
"I hired Chloe eighteen months ago," I explained, taking a seat at the head of the table—the seat Daniel had occupied moments earlier. I crossed my legs comfortably. "I needed someone to test Daniel's loyalty, but more importantly, I needed someone inside his private network. Daniel is careless when he feels dominant. He gave Chloe access to his master passwords, his hidden bank accounts, and his private phone messages within three weeks of their little 'affair' starting."
Daniel turned his terrifying gaze back to me, the veins bulging in his neck. "You set me up! From the very beginning!"
"You set yourself up, Daniel," I replied flatly. "You assumed because I was quiet when your mother insulted me, I was weak. You assumed because I didn't argue when Vanessa used my credit cards, I didn't notice. You mistook my patience for submission. But patience isn't submission, Daniel. It’s preparation."
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from her belt. "Daniel Vance, Gloria Vance, and Vanessa Vance. You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate embezzlement, and identity theft. You have the right to remain silent—"
"Wait!" Daniel screamed, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She struck me! She threatened me! Look at her—she’s insane! And what about the physical abuse? She’s lying!"
Detective Miller stopped, looking at Daniel with utter disgust. "Mr. Vance, we’ve been listening to the live audio feed from the hidden microphones in this room for the last forty-five minutes. We heard you slap your wife across the face because dinner wasn't ready. We heard your mother encourage it, and we heard your sister threaten her."
Gloria's face drained of what little color remained. "You... you recorded us tonight?"
"Every word," Detective Miller confirmed. "Officers, secure the suspects."
The two uniformed officers moved in swiftly. Gloria began to weep loudly, her theatrical composure completely shattering as steel cuffs clicked around her delicate wrists. Vanessa tried to pull away, screaming profanities at Chloe and me, while Daniel stood frozen, his eyes wide with a combination of rage and profound horror as his wrists were secured behind his back.
As the officers pulled Daniel toward the door, he stopped next to my chair. He leaned down, his voice a low, toxic whisper. "You think you've won, Claire? You think this is over? You have no idea where that money went. You have no idea who my mother really works for."
I looked up at him, my expression unyielding. "I know about the Vault, Daniel."
Daniel froze. The absolute terror that flooded his eyes in that single second told me everything I needed to know.
"Take him away," Detective Miller ordered.
As they were dragged out into the night, their protests echoing down the grand hallway, Chloe walked over to my side, placing a thin, dark blue folder on the table next to the silver tray.
"He was right about one thing, Claire," Chloe said quietly, her professional demeanor dropping slightly, revealing genuine anxiety. "Gloria wasn't working alone. The offshore transfers weren't just for luxury cars and gambling debts. They were paying off a syndicate."

I looked at the blue folder. "The offshore accounts in Liechtenstein?"
"Yes," Chloe whispered. "And the man who owns those accounts... he’s already on his way to Chicago."
