Chapter 13 - Shadows in the Ledger-13

Two years after the opening of the European branches, an unexpected digital flag appeared on Montgomery-Sterling's secondary audit server in Zurich.
It was a quiet Tuesday evening in Chicago. I was sitting in my private study at my new lakeside residence—a home built entirely of glass, warm timber, and open spaces—reviewing the quarterly financial reports on my tablet.
A high-priority notification popped up on my encrypted terminal:
UNAUTHORIZED ATTEMPT TO ACCESS RESTRICTED FILE: ESTATE_RECOVERY_1995.DAT
ORIGIN LOCATION: GENEVA PRIVATE BANKING DISTRICT
I frowned, setting my tea down. The file in question contained the encrypted records of the offshore accounts once used by Charles Vance and the Isle of Man entities. It had been sealed by federal court order five years ago and should have been completely dormant.
I opened an encrypted satellite channel directly to Marcus.
"Claire?" Marcus answered instantly, his tone sharp and alert. "I saw the server alert. I'm already looking at the IP trace."
"Who is trying to open the 1995 recovery files, Marcus?" I asked, leaning closer to my screen.
"The access key used in Geneva wasn't a hacked code, Claire," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, grave tone. "It was a primary signature key registered to an original account holder."
My heart skipped a beat. "Charles Vance is in federal prison in Colorado. Gloria is locked in Illinois. Who else had a primary signature key?"
"Victoria Sterling had a twin sister, Claire," Marcus revealed softly. "Her name was Eleanor Sterling. She vanished from public records in 1992 after a bitter dispute with Charles Vance over the initial funding of the real estate firm."
I sat frozen in my chair. A twin sister.
"Did my father know about Eleanor?" I asked.
"According to the archived personal journals from 1994," Marcus replied, "your father believed Eleanor had moved to France after signing a corporate release. But the access log in Geneva shows that Eleanor’s signature key has been active once every five years like clockwork."
I looked out the window at the dark water of Lake Michigan. The Vance family had been the visible parasites, the obvious executioners of my father's tragedy. But as with every deep web of corporate deceit, there was always another layer waiting in the shadows.

"Where is Eleanor right now, Marcus?"
"Her private jet just cleared airspace over New York," Marcus said grimly. "She’s heading to Chicago."
