Chapter 14 - The Mirror's Identity-14

The meeting took place at eight o'clock the following morning in the private top-floor conference room of the Montgomery-Sterling Building.
The rain was tapping softly against the reinforced glass windows as the elevator doors chimed open.
Stepping out of the elevator was a woman in her late fifties, wearing an immaculate ivory tailored coat, dark sunglasses, and holding a silver-topped cane. When she lowered her sunglasses, my breath caught in my throat.
She looked almost identical to the yellowed photograph of Victoria Sterling I had kept on my desk for years—the same sharp green eyes, the same high cheekbones, and the same commanding posture.
Behind her stood two sharp-looking legal representatives carrying leather briefcases.
"Claire Montgomery," Eleanor Sterling said, her voice rich, refined, and carrying an unmistakably European accent. "It is surreal to look into the face of Arthur's daughter."
"Eleanor," I said smoothly, standing behind the long glass table without offering a handshake. "You've spent thirty years off the grid. Why surface now?"
Eleanor walked slowly into the room, leaning lightly on her silver cane, her eyes scanning the sleek modern architecture of the corporate office.
"When Charles killed my sister thirty years ago," Eleanor said quietly, "I knew that if I stayed in America, Charles and Gloria would murder me too. I took my small share of the early capital, fled to Switzerland, and built a private asset firm in Zurich."
"And you let my father carry the burden of Charles's blackmail alone for decades?" I challenged her, my voice hard. "You let Victoria’s memory be erased from this company?"
Eleanor stopped, looking directly into my eyes with an intensity that rivaled my own.
"I didn't leave Arthur alone, Claire," Eleanor revealed softly. "Who do you think provided the encrypted satellite servers Chloe used to hack Daniel’s accounts five years ago? Who do you think financed Marcus’s private security firm when your father was sick?"
I froze, looking over at Marcus, who nodded gently from the side of the room.
"Eleanor has been our dark angel from Zurich since the very beginning, Claire," Marcus said quietly. "She couldn't return to the US while Charles had political immunity in New York. But she was the one who funded the forensic team that found the Swiss pharmaceutical receipts."
Eleanor walked up to the glass table, reaching into her coat pocket, and laid a small crystal USB drive onto the surface.
"I didn't come to Chicago to claim your fortune, Claire," Eleanor said warmly. "You have proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are Victoria’s true spiritual heir. I came to give you the final piece of your mother’s vision."
I reached out, taking the crystal drive into my hand. "What is this?"
"The global expansion rights for the Sterling Sustainable Energy Grid," Eleanor smiled. "A project Victoria designed thirty years ago that Charles tried to steal. It belongs to you now, Claire. To Montgomery-Sterling."
I looked at Eleanor, feeling the last remaining threads of historical conflict dissolve into a complete, beautiful picture of legacy and justice.

"Thank you, Aunt Eleanor," I said softly.
Eleanor smiled, a genuine tear glistening in her green eyes. "Welcome to the real family, Claire."
