Chapter 12 - The Gathering at the Table-12

The setting sun cast a rich golden light across the courtyard of the Montgomery-Sterling Headquarters in downtown Chicago.

In the center of the courtyard sat a long, beautifully crafted oak dining table, surrounded by twelve comfortable wooden chairs. There were no silver serving lids, no sharp voices, and no hidden fear.

The table was covered with a simple linen runner, fresh white roses, platters of fresh summer fruit, roasted vegetables, and decanters of clear water and wine.

Sitting around the table were the people who had helped turn my nightmare into a victory: Chloe, Marcus, Sarah Miller, Patricia, and four young women who had recently graduated from the Sterling Sanctuary's professional mentorship program.

I sat at the head of the table, holding a glass of sparkling water, looking at the laughing, happy faces surrounding me.

Marcus lifted his wineglass, tapping it gently with a silver spoon. The light chiming sound brought the lively conversations to a quiet, respectful pause.

"I’d like to offer a toast," Marcus said, standing up and looking down the long table at me. "To Arthur Montgomery and Victoria Sterling—two brilliant visionaries whose legacy was restored by the strongest woman I have ever known."

Everyone raised their glasses, shouting, "To Arthur, Victoria, and Claire!"

I stood up, holding my glass high, looking at my friends, my team, and my real family.

"To the table," I said softly, my voice filled with unshakeable warmth. "May it always be a place of truth, honor, and freedom for everyone who sits beside us."

We drank together under the golden twilight sky.

As the evening faded into a calm, starry night, I walked over to the edge of the courtyard terrace, looking down at the illuminated streets of the city below.

I touched the corner of my cheek—the place where a cruel hand had tried to humiliate me five years ago. There was no mark, no pain, and no scar.

Only the quiet, enduring strength of a woman who had owned her house, her fortune, and her story from the very beginning.
