Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Paradox-6-

The descent down the pitch-black emergency stairwell of the Aethelgard tower felt like a journey through the bowels of a mechanical beast that had just suffered a massive coronary. The air grew stale and thick with the smell of ozone and burnt plastic. Every step Daniel took echoed with the frantic gasps of Vanessa behind him, her designer shoes clacking unevenly against the concrete risers as she stumbled in the gloom.
"Daniel, wait! Please, I can't keep up," she whimpered, her voice cracking with terror.
Daniel didn't slow down. He couldn't. Every second they wasted was another heartbeat the twins might lose in the hospital across town. He grabbed her arm, hauling her forward with a force that left no room for argument. "If you stop, Vanessa, you die here. They aren't going to leave loose ends now that the grid is open."
They burst through the heavy steel exit door into the freezing Chicago alleyway. The night air hit them like a physical blow, carrying the bitter scent of melting snow and exhaust fumes. The streets were eerily quiet, the massive data blackout having triggered rolling electrical failures across the downtown core. Traffic lights blinked blindly, and storefront alarms wailed in the distance like wounded animals.
Daniel pushed Vanessa toward an idling, nondescript sedan parked half on the sidewalk. The engine was running, and the hazard lights flickered weakly. As they approached, the rear door swung open automatically.
The family lawyer—the woman who had given him the gun and the warning in the subway tunnels—sat in the front passenger seat, staring back at them through the rearview mirror.
"Get in," she commanded, her voice devoid of panic. "We don't have much time. The corporate recovery teams are already rebooting the backup servers at the secondary site."
Daniel shoved Vanessa into the back seat and climbed in beside her, slamming the door shut. "The grid is open-source. I broadcast the entire architecture to the public net. Why aren't they running?"
"Because public exposure doesn't stop a corporation like Aethelgard, Daniel; it only makes them desperate," the lawyer replied, turning slightly in her seat as the car lurched forward into the dark streets. "They spent thirty years embedding those nodes into the city’s municipal infrastructure. Turning off the penthouse server is like cutting the head off a hydra. Two more grow back."
Daniel stared out the frost-covered window, his mind racing. "The hospital. My wife, my children—Arthur said they were poisoned. Is there an antidote?"
"There is," the lawyer said, pulling a heavy steel vial from her briefcase and handing it to him. "Your father anticipated this day. He knew that whoever controlled the board would eventually try to weaponize the biological dampener. This vial contains the counter-agent. But to administer it to the infants, it has to be synchronized through a local node. And the only local node close enough… is the central processing unit hidden beneath the maternity ward of Mercy General."
Vanessa clutched her head, rocking back and forth in the seat. "I didn't know… I swear to God, Daniel, I thought we were just stealing money. They told me you were skimming, they told me the family company was going bankrupt—they used my debts against me!"
Daniel looked at his sister, his expression cold as ice. "You sold your soul for a lifestyle you couldn't afford, Vanessa. You traded my family's lives for a balance sheet. When this is over, you’re going to walk into a police station and confess to every single crime you committed. If you don't, I won't need Aethelgard to finish you."

The car screeched to a halt outside the brightly lit entrance of Mercy General Hospital. Despite the citywide blackout, the hospital’s emergency generators hummed with a heavy, throbbing bass, casting an eerie, yellow-tinted glow over the ambulance bay.
Daniel didn't wait for the car to stop completely. He wrenched the door open, clutched the steel vial tightly against his chest, and sprinted toward the sliding glass doors, ready to wage war against anyone who stood between him and his family.
