Chapter 13 - The Wisconsin Wilderness-13-

The snow-covered pines of northern Wisconsin stood like silent sentinels against a pale, bruised winter sky. The winding dirt road leading to the old Thorne family lake house had not been plowed in years, forcing Daniel to leave his SUV at the tree line and hike the final mile through knee-deep drifts.

He carried a heavy backpack filled with tools, a encrypted laptop, and the sidearm he had kept from the Chicago siege. Elena and the twins were safely stationed at a roadside motel two towns over, under the protection of Agent Vance’s federal detail, but Daniel knew he couldn't involve local law enforcement in what lay ahead. This was a family matter—a final debt to be settled between a dead father, a corrupted legacy, and the son who inherited the wreckage.

The lake house loomed ahead, a sprawling structure of dark timber and massive stone chimneys half-buried in snowdrifts. Its windows were dark, reflecting the gloomy twilight like dead eyes.

Daniel climbed the wooden porch steps, the boards groaning under his weight, and slid his father’s heavy brass key into the front door lock. It turned with a heavy, rusted click.

He stepped inside. The air was frigid, smelling of old cedar, dust, and long-forgotten memories. He flicked on his tactical flashlight, the bright beam cutting through the gloom to illuminate the grand stone fireplace, the dust-covered leather furniture, and the framed photographs of a family that had been torn apart by greed and ambition.

According to his father’s recorded instructions, the entrance to the underground server vault was hidden beneath the heavy oak dining table.

Daniel crossed the room, dropped to his knees, and began shoving heavy chairs out of the way. He grabbed the edge of the dining table and dragged it aside, revealing a heavy iron trapdoor set flush into the hardwood flooring.

A digital keypad was mounted on the adjacent wall, its screen glowing with a faint, pulsing amber light.

Enter Override Code.

Daniel frowned. His father hadn't mentioned a code on the microcassette tape. He pulled out the encrypted laptop, connecting it via a fiber-optic cable to the auxiliary port beneath the keypad to bypass the security lock.

Lines of code scrolled across the laptop screen. Decrypting Thorne Family Archive...

Suddenly, the screen flashed red. An automated audio prompt echoed from the keypad speaker, cold and synthetic.

“Biometric verification required. Please provide Thorne blood sample to proceed.”

Daniel stared at the scanner. His father had engineered the system to recognize only direct biological descendants. He pulled a sterile lancet from his backpack, pricked his thumb, and pressed a single drop of blood onto the optical glass of the scanner.

Verify... Match confirmed. Welcome, Director Thorne.

The heavy iron trapdoor hissed, unlocking with a deep pneumatic thud, and slowly lifted upward, revealing a steep flight of concrete stairs descending into the pitch-black subterranean vault.

Daniel took a deep breath, gripped his flashlight, and descended into the dark.
