Chapter 14 - The Core Vault-14-

The subterranean vault was vastly different from the corporate data centers in Chicago. Instead of sleek, humming server racks, this room was a relic of early-generation computing—massive, room-sized mainframes cooled by ancient liquid-nitrogen pipes that hissed softly in the stillness.
Daniel’s flashlight beam swept across the dusty control consoles until it landed on the central terminal. A large, red physical lever was mounted on the side of the console, labeled with a single word in yellow stencil: FAIL-SAFE.
Beside the lever was an active digital display showing a countdown timer in glowing green digits.
12:45:30... 12:45:29...
Thirteen hours until the automatic data wipe triggered.
Daniel sat down at the terminal, plugging his laptop into the mainframe to analyze the system architecture. If he pulled the physical lever, the data wipe would execute immediately, destroying the final financial records of Aethelgard’s offshore investments. If he disabled the system through the terminal, he could copy the files and hand them over to Agent Vance, ensuring the corrupt board members were successfully prosecuted.
He began typing commands into the console, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
Accessing primary archive... Copying ledger partitions...
Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights in the vault flickered on with a violent, blinding buzz.
Daniel froze. He hadn't turned the lights on.
A heavy pair of boots echoed on the concrete stairs behind him.
"I was wondering when you’d find your way out here, Daniel," a smooth, cultured voice echoed through the underground room.
Daniel spun around in his chair, reaching instinctively for his sidearm, but stopped dead. Standing at the bottom of the stairs, holding a silenced pistol pointed directly at Daniel’s chest, was a man in an expensive wool overcoat—Julian Vance, the former CEO of Aethelgard’s primary investment wing, rumored to have fled the country months ago.
"Julian," Daniel said, his voice dangerously calm. "I thought you were in a Swiss extradition black hole."
"Extradition is such an ugly word," Julian replied, stepping forward into the light, his lips curled into a cold, predatory smile. "A few well-placed bribes, a private charter plane, and suddenly corporate criminals find themselves enjoying the Italian Riviera. But then my sources informed me that the Thorne family vault was still active. And that you were coming to empty it."
"You don't have the biometric clearance," Daniel said, gesturing to the scanner. "You can't access the archives."
"I don't need to access them," Julian countered, his eyes gleaming with greed. "I just need to make sure you don't copy them. If that fail-safe triggers, my hidden accounts in the Caymans are protected forever. If you disable it, I go back to federal prison. So, you’re going to step away from the keyboard, Daniel, and let the timer run out."
Daniel looked at the countdown timer on the screen. 12:42:15...
He knew he couldn't outdraw Julian at this distance. He needed a distraction. He needed to use the environment against a man who thought he had already won.
"You really think my father built this vault just to hide money?" Daniel asked, his voice steady as he slowly stood up from the desk, keeping his hands visible.

Julian’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"My father didn't build an escape hatch," Daniel said, taking a calculated step toward the liquid-nitrogen cooling lines running along the wall. "He built a bomb."
