Chapter 10 - Ashes of the Empire-10-

The morning sun broke over Chicago like a cold blade, cutting through the smog and illuminating the charred, smoking ruins of the Aethelgard data subsidiary downtown. For three days, federal agents, state prosecutors, and forensic accountants had swarmed every property, shell corporation, and offshore account tied to the conglomerate.

The empire had crumbled faster than a house of cards.

In the quiet, sunlit private recovery suite of Mercy General Hospital, the air smelled of antiseptic and fresh flowers. Elena sat propped up against a mountain of pillows, her face pale but glowing with a profound, quiet strength. In the bassinet beside her bed, the twins slept peacefully, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect unison.

Daniel stood by the window, looking out over the city skyline. His hands were bandaged from the glass cuts, and his shoulders ached with a deep, bone-weary exhaustion, but for the first time in months, the weight in his chest was gone.

The door clicked open softly.

He turned to see his sister, Vanessa, standing in the doorway. She looked smaller, stripped of the designer clothes and the manic confidence that had once defined her. Her hair was pulled back simply, and her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen from crying.

"May I come in?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Daniel looked at Elena. She gave him a slow, complicated nod, her expression guarded but forgiving. Daniel turned back to the door and stepped aside, gesturing for Vanessa to enter.

She walked slowly to the side of the bassinet, looking down at the sleeping infants with a mixture of awe and profound shame. A single tear slipped down her cheek, landing softly on the edge of the blanket.

"I signed the confession this morning," Vanessa said, not looking up. "The federal prosecutors offered a reduced sentence in exchange for my full cooperation regarding the Aethelgard financial routing. I'll be serving five years at the minimum-security facility in Dwight."

"It's a start," Daniel said quietly.

"I don't expect you to ever forgive me, Daniel," she choked out, her shoulders shaking. "I let greed blind me. I let them use me. I almost destroyed everything."

"You did destroy everything we used to be, Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice firm but devoid of malice. "The family we knew is gone. But you chose to walk into the light at the end. When you get out... make something real of yourself. Don't ever let someone else pull your strings again."

She nodded blindly, turning to leave the room. As the door clicked shut behind her, the heavy, lingering ghost of the past seemed to finally vanish from the space.

Elena reached out her hand from the bed. Daniel walked over, sliding his palm into hers, intertwining their fingers.

"They're safe," Elena murmured, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "We're safe."

"We are," Daniel replied, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "The grid is gone. Aethelgard is finished. No more secrets, no more shadows."

"What do we do now?" she asked, smiling softly.

Daniel looked back out the window, where the city was beginning to wake up under a clear, azure sky. "We build something new. From scratch. Just us, and the kids."
