Chapter 9 - THE AUDIT OF THE PAST

-9

While Roberto and Sofía spent the afternoon planting rows of red tomatoes and green bell peppers in the estate's private greenhouse, a team of independent cybersecurity forensics specialists was hard at work in the study.

The auxiliary terminal behind the walnut bookshelf was humming softly, processing gigabytes of recovered metadata from Vanessa’s personal devices and cloud backups. Roberto had ordered a complete, forensic sweep of every digital footprint Vanessa had left behind during her tenure in the house. He wanted to ensure there were no sleeper accounts, hidden communication channels, or delayed-action blackmail files left lingering in the digital ether.

Viktor, the head of Roberto’s private security detail, stepped into the greenhouse, wiping his boots on the mat before approaching Roberto with a thick manila folder.

"Boss," Viktor said quietly, waiting until Sofía was distracted by burying a small seed into a pot of rich black soil.

Roberto stood up, dusting off his knees, and stepped a few paces away with Viktor. "What did the forensics team find?"

"Nothing that threatens the family," Viktor replied, opening the folder to reveal a printed summary sheet. "Vanessa’s digital footprint was thoroughly scrubbed by our scripts. But we did uncover an interesting paper trail regarding how she and Marcus Vance initially connected."

Roberto raised an eyebrow. "Go on."

"It wasn't a random chance meeting at a charity gala eight months ago, like Marcus claimed," Viktor explained, pointing a scarred finger at a printed bank transfer log. "Marcus hired a private headhunter firm specializing in high-end social engineering over a year ago. They specifically scouted Vanessa out of a circle of corporate opportunists in Geneva, vetted her background, and planted her path to intersect with yours."

A cold, hard glint flickered in Roberto’s eyes. "So the entire courtship was a manufactured operation from day one."

"Precisely. They needed someone who could infiltrate your inner circle, gain your trust, and systematically isolate your daughter without raising immediate red flags," Viktor said. "If you hadn't caught them in the act that evening, their next phase was to stage a medical emergency while you were out of the country, forcing a court-appointed guardianship transfer under emergency jurisdiction."

Roberto stared at the documents, feeling a brief spike of cold fury before letting it wash away into absolute calm. They had played a deep, ruthless game. But they had underestimated a father’s instinct.

"File the complete dossier with the federal prosecutors handling Marcus’s indictment," Roberto instructed softly. "Let the judge see the full scope of their premeditation. Make sure it becomes part of the permanent public record so neither of them ever sees the light of day."

"Done," Viktor nodded, turning and walking back down the stone path toward the house.

Roberto looked back down at Sofía, who was now proudly holding up a small trowel covered in dirt. The past was fully mapped, fully exposed, and permanently locked away.
