Chapter 6 - THE DAWN OF A NEW OATH

The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon, painting the jagged Manhattan skyline in brilliant streaks of gold and bruised violet as Roberto’s town car pulled through the iron gates of the estate. The morning air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine from the courtyard gardens.
Inside the house, everything was quiet.
Roberto walked through the grand foyer, his footsteps soft against the marble floor. He removed his coat, tossing it over the back of a sofa, and loosened his collar. He was exhausted—his body ached from a sleepless night of interrogation, legal maneuvering, and ruthless execution of justice—but his mind was clearer and lighter than it had been in years.
The rot had been excised. The wolves had been driven from the fold.
As he passed the living room, he noticed a soft light glowing from the kitchen. He paused, changing direction, and walked quietly down the hall.
María was standing by the stove, humming a gentle Spanish tune while stirring a small pot of oatmeal. The smell of fresh coffee and cinnamon filled the room, warm and comforting.
"Good morning, Mr. Roberto," María said softly, turning around with a warm, knowing smile as she noticed him standing in the doorway. She didn't look surprised to see him up so early. "You look like a man who has fought a war and won."
"The war is over, María," Roberto said, walking over and leaning against the kitchen counter, letting out a long, weary breath. "Marcus Vance has been stripped of his title and is currently facing federal indictment. And Vanessa... Vanessa is gone for good. She will never enter this house again."
María stopped stirring, her hands resting on the edge of the pot. A profound sense of relief washed over her lined, gentle face, and she pressed a hand to her chest. "Thank God. And thank you, Mr. Roberto. I was so worried... I didn't know how to protect Sofía from someone so cold."
"You did protect her," Roberto said, his voice thick with genuine gratitude. "You stayed when no one else would. You gave her the one thing money couldn't buy: unconditional presence."
Before María could reply, a soft rustle came from the doorway behind Roberto.
He turned around.
Sofía stood there, wearing her pale yellow pajamas, her small stuffed rabbit clutched tightly under one arm. Her blind eyes were turned in his direction, and though she couldn't see him standing there, she seemed to instinctively feel his presence.
"Daddy?" she whispered, her voice timid, tinged with the lingering ghost of the nightmares that had haunted her for months.
Roberto’s heart melted instantly. He dropped to one knee, opening his arms wide.
"I'm right here, my love," he said softly.
Sofía didn't hesitate. She rushed forward, navigating the kitchen floor with a sudden, surefooted confidence, and threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his shoulder.
Roberto wrapped his arms around her tiny frame, holding her so tightly he could feel the steady, reassuring beat of her heart against his ribs.
"Did the bad lady leave?" Sofía whispered into his ear, her voice trembling slightly.
"Yes," Roberto said firmly, kissing the top of her soft, golden curls. "She is gone, Sofía. And she is never coming back. I promise you, nothing and no one will ever hurt you again. You are safe here. Always."
Sofía let out a long, shuddering sigh—the sound of a child who had finally unloaded a crushing, unbearable weight she had been forced to carry all alone. She relaxed completely against him, her small hands clutching the lapels of his shirt.
"I love you, Daddy," she murmured.

"I love you too, my little bird," Roberto whispered, closing his eyes as the morning sun poured through the kitchen window, bathing them both in warm, golden light.
The fortress was finally a home. And the shadows that had tried to steal his daughter had been banished to the dark, never to return.
