Chapter 14 - THE HORIZON OF LIGHT

-14

The winter solstice came and went, marking the longest night of the year—and the turning point toward brighter days.

On a crisp, clear Sunday morning just before the new year, Roberto took Sofía and María out to the highest point of the estate's sprawling northern ridge, where an old stone gazebo overlooked the snow-covered valley stretching out toward the horizon.

The air was freezing, but the morning sun was breaking through the gray clouds, flooding the landscape with a brilliant, blinding wash of golden winter light.

Sofía stood at the edge of the stone railing, her face tilted upward toward the sky. She wasn't wearing her dark glasses. She stood with her eyes open, feeling the warmth of the sunbeams kissing her skin, breathing in the crisp mountain air.

"Can you feel it, Sofía?" Roberto asked gently, standing close behind her with his hands resting lightly on her shoulders.

"The sun," she whispered, a serene smile spreading across her face. "It's warm. It feels like... like a hand touching my cheek."

Roberto felt a heavy lump rise in his throat. She couldn't see the light with her eyes, but she could feel its power, its warmth, and its unyielding presence. It was the exact same light that had pulled them out of the darkest abyss imaginable.

"That's what home feels like," Roberto told her softly, kneeling down so he was eye-level with her, even though she couldn't see his expression. "It's warmth. It's safety. And it's something no one can ever take away from you."

Sofía reached out, her small hands finding his face, tracing his jawline, his cheeks, and the familiar lines around his mouth with gentle, knowing familiarity.

"You brought the light back, Daddy," she whispered.

Roberto closed his eyes, pressing his forehead gently against hers as a single, perfect tear slipped down his cheek. "We brought it back together, Sofía. Together."
