Chapter 5 - THE LEDGER OF TEARS

5 -

The chandelier overhead cast a brilliant, unforgiving light down upon the marble foyer. The storm outside battered the reinforced glass of the front doors, but inside, the only sound was the ragged, wet breathing of Mick O’Shea as he knelt in a pool of his own blood, trembling violently against the cold stone.

Sadie stared down at the loan shark. For months, this man had occupied the darkest corners of her nightmares. He had been the face of her inescapable prison—the ledger of unpayable debts, the looming threat over Sam’s hospital bed, the reason her hands were cracked, bleeding, and raw from industrial bleach.

Now, he was broken, begging for his life at her feet, reduced to nothing by a single phone call to a mafia boss.

"Well?" Victor prompted quietly, his gaze fixed on Sadie’s profile. There was no pressure in his voice, only an expectant weight, as if he were waiting to see what kind of creature the crucible of poverty and abuse had forged inside her. "The ledger is open, Sadie. You want his hands broken? You want his territory on the south side? Or do you want him erased completely?"

Mick whimpered, pressing his forehead against the polished marble, the blood from his broken nose smearing across the floor. "Please, miss... have mercy... I’ve got a family—"

"Shut your mouth, Mick," Sadie said.

Her voice wasn't loud. It didn't shake. It was a cold, flat monotone that surprised even her.

She stepped closer, looking down at the man who had terrorized her life. "You didn't have mercy when you added illegal compounding fees to a medical debt. You didn't have mercy when you threatened to pull a dying fifteen-year-old boy off his IV."

She turned her head slightly to look at Victor.

"I don't want his territory, Victor. I don't want his money," Sadie said clearly. "I want the ledger. The real one. The physical book where he keeps the names of every desperate person he’s trapped on the south side."

Victor’s eyebrows rose in a fraction of an expression, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his rugged features. He tilted his head toward Rico, his chief enforcer.

Rico immediately reached into his wet jacket pocket, pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger stained with coffee rings and grease, and tossed it carelessly onto the floor in front of Sadie. It landed with a heavy thud.

"It’s all in there," Rico grunted, wiping blood from his knuckles with a handkerchief. "Every loan, every fake interest rate, every victim from here to the docks. We raided his safe house twenty minutes before we hit the hospital."

Sadie knelt down, ignoring the dampness of the marble, and picked up the ledger. Her cracked, bleeding fingers flipped open the heavy cover, revealing pages filled with names, dates, and exorbitant sums scrawled in messy black ink.

"And the hospital?" Sadie asked, looking up at Victor with a sudden spike of anxiety. "Sam? Did your men get there in time?"

"Before Mick’s thugs even made it past the parking lot," Victor assured her, his tone softening by a fraction. "Rico’s team cleared the lobby, stationed two armed guards outside his room, and brought in a private concierge doctor to review his chart. Your brother is sleeping, Sadie. He’s safe."

A wave of profound, overwhelming relief washed over her, so strong it nearly stole the breath from her lungs. The invisible weight that had been crushing her chest for six months finally shattered, leaving her dizzy and lightheaded.

She looked back down at Mick, who was still groaning on the floor.

"You’re going to give up your license," Sadie told the loan shark, her voice ringing clear through the vaulted foyer. "You’re going to wipe every single debt recorded in this book. Every family, every student, every desperate worker you’ve bled dry—they're free. Starting tonight."

Mick looked up, horrified, clutching at the air. "I can't do that! That’s my entire operation! That’s millions of dollars—"

"You can," Victor interrupted, his boot coming down heavily right beside Mick’s hand, pinning his fingers against the marble with just enough pressure to make him shriek. "Or you can spend the rest of your very short life wondering which of my capos gets to feed you to the stray dogs down by the harbor. Choose wisely, Mick."

"I'll do it!" Mick screamed, tears mixing with blood on his face. "I swear to God, I'll wipe the books! Every single one!"

May you like

Victor lifted his boot, stepping back. He looked down at Sadie as she clutched the heavy leather ledger to her chest like a shield.

"Take the book," Victor said softly, extending a hand to help her up from the floor. "And take the rest of the night off. You’re done scrubbing my floors, Sadie."
