Chapter 13 - THE NEW EMPIRE

13 -

Six months later, the financial landscape of the city had undergone a seismic, permanent shift.

The old guard of brutal, unpredictable street violence represented by Mick O’Shea and his kind had been systematically wiped out, replaced by a sophisticated, impenetrable corporate conglomerate operating under the innocuous name of the Castello Philanthropic & Logistics Foundation.

From the outside, it looked like a massive, highly successful corporate entity funding municipal hospital expansions, harbor modernizations, and university scholarships across the state. From the inside—governed from the fourth-floor administrative fortress of the Castello estate—it was an absolute, untouchable financial empire controlled jointly by a mafia boss and a former maid who had turned a ledger into a weapon of mass destruction.

Inside the private oncology suite at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the sunlight poured brilliantly through the windows.

Sam Hayes sat at a full-sized mahogany desk set up in the corner of his upgraded private suite. He wore a crisp collegiate hoodie, his hair fully grown back, looking every bit the healthy, thriving fifteen-year-old high school student he was supposed to be. His laptop screen flashed with coding homework, interspersed with high-score notifications from his favorite video games.

The door opened, and Sadie walked in, carrying a large white bakery box tied with a red ribbon.

"Chocolate chip cookies from the bakery downtown," Sadie announced, setting the box down on the desk.

Sam spun his chair around, grabbing a cookie immediately with a grin. "You're spoiling me, sis. If Mom were here, she'd say you're creating a monster."

"Mom would say you're finally eating enough," Sadie laughed, pulling up a chair and sitting across from him. "How’s the algebra homework? Did the tutor help you wrap your head around quadratic equations?"

"Piece of cake," Sam said around a bite of cookie. He paused, looking at his sister with a sudden, serious expression in his bright eyes. "Hey, Sadie... I was looking at the foundation’s public grant registry online this morning. I saw they set up a permanent, fully funded pediatric cancer research endowment named after us."

Sadie’s smile softened. "They did."

"And... I know the Castello foundation funds all my treatments, my schooling, and the new house we're moving into next month," Sam continued, his voice dropping into a quieter tone. "You don't have to scrub floors anymore. You run the whole operation now. But... are you safe? Working for a guy like Victor Castello... I mean, he’s a terrifying dude."

Sadie reached across the desk, gently tapping the tip of Sam’s nose.

"Victor isn't terrifying, Sam. He’s just protective," Sadie said, her voice filled with absolute conviction. "And nobody is ever going to hurt us again. I promise you that."

As if summoned by her words, the door to the hospital suite clicked open.

Victor Castello walked in, wearing his tailored navy suit, holding a fresh bouquet of white lilies. He looked around the bright, sunlit room, his rugged features softening as he saw Sam healthy, energetic, and laughing.

"Afternoon, Sam," Victor greeted him, placing the flowers in the glass vase on the windowsill.

"Hey, Victor," Sam grinned, holding up a half-eaten cookie. "Want a cookie? My sister brought them."

May you like

Victor chuckled, walking over to stand behind Sadie’s chair, resting his hand casually on the backrest. He looked down at Sadie, his dark eyes flashing with a quiet, fierce warmth.

"I'll pass on the cookie, kid," Victor said smoothly, looking down at Sadie with an unreadable, powerful intensity. "I already got the best thing in the room."
