Chapter 12 - THE WHISPER IN THE CORRIDOR

12 -
The second-floor corridor of the Castello estate was quiet, bathed in the warm, amber glow of the brass wall sconces that Sadie had once been assigned to polish in terror.
Tonight, she walked down the polished runner carpet with a steady, unhurried stride. The air no longer smelled of industrial bleach and lemon disinfectant; it smelled of rich mahogany, expensive wool, and absolute power.
As she passed the heavy mahogany door of Victor’s private office, the door clicked open.
Victor stepped out into the hallway, dressed in a charcoal vest and white shirt, holding a glass of scotch in his hand. He had clearly been listening to the reports come up from the fourth floor. A faint, knowing smile played at the corners of his mouth.
"I heard you just negotiated a peace treaty with Boston over a speakerphone," Victor said, leaning against the doorframe as she approached.
"It wasn't a negotiation," Sadie corrected, stopping a foot away from him, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. "It was an unconditional surrender."
Victor took a slow sip of his scotch, his gaze never leaving her face. "Marcone has been a thorn in my family's side for ten years. It took me three bloody turf wars just to keep him out of our western districts. You eliminated him with a spreadsheet and a phone call before midnight."
"Violence is inefficient," Sadie said smoothly, echoing a lesson she had learned the hard way. "Numbers don't bleed unless you want them to. And when you control the math, you control the men who hold the guns."
Victor set his glass down on a nearby side table with a soft clink. He stepped closer, closing the distance between them until the warmth of his body pressed against the cool air of the corridor.
"You've completely transformed this house, Sadie," Victor murmured, his deep voice dropping into an intimate register that sent a shiver down her spine. "The maids don't look over their shoulders anymore. The accountants actually balance their books. And my enemies are currently packing their bags in Boston."
"I told you," Sadie whispered, lifting her chin to meet his gaze head-on. "I'm running the house now."
Victor reached out, his hand gently cupping her cheek. His touch was warm, firm, and entirely devoid of the predatory danger that had marked their first meeting in this exact hallway. It was the touch of an equal.
"And what about me?" Victor asked quietly, his dark eyes searching hers. "Am I just another asset on your balance sheet?"
Sadie’s heart skipped a beat, but her expression remained completely composed. She reached up, placing her hand gently over his wrist, feeling the steady, powerful pulse beneath his skin.
May you like
"No, Victor," Sadie said, a soft, genuine smile breaking across her face. "You're the only partnership I didn't have to audit."
Victor pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her waist, and lowered his lips to hers in a slow, deliberate kiss that sealed the alliance of shadows and steel in the very hallway where it had all begun.
