Chapter 11 - THE ALLIANCE OF SHADOWS

11 -

The digital clock on the wall of the Castello estate’s fourth-floor administrative office glowed a crisp 2:14 a.m.—exactly twenty-four hours to the minute since Sadie Hayes had stood paralyzed in the second-floor hallway holding a vibrating burner phone while a mafia boss pointed a gun at her chest.

Tonight, she wasn't hiding in the shadows. She sat comfortably behind her glass-topped executive desk, bathed in the soft glow of multiple computer monitors tracking the real-time financial restructuring of the south-side docks.

The heavy oak door of her office swung open without a knock.

Rico stepped inside, looking slightly more disheveled than usual, holding a secure encrypted satellite phone in his calloused hand.

"Boss lady," Rico said, his voice dropping into a gravelly urgent tone. "We got a secure ping coming in from an encrypted maritime line out of Boston. It’s the Marcone syndicate’s senior capos. They heard about Councilman Vance’s resignation and the DOJ raid on Sterling Maritime. They want to talk terms."

Sadie didn't look up from her keyboard immediately. She finished typing a final line of code that locked out an unauthorized IP address trying to breach the estate’s secondary server firewall, then leaned back in her ergonomic leather chair.

"Put it on speaker," Sadie instructed calmly.

Rico flipped open the satellite phone and placed it in the center of her desk, pressing the speaker button.

A heavy, static-laced voice crackled through the small speaker, carrying the unmistakable Boston accent of Vincent Marcone, head of the rival New England syndicate.

"Castello," the voice barked through the static. "Your people have been very busy destroying our municipal assets over the last eighteen hours. We want to know who’s running your new financial division, and we want to sit down at the table before we turn your shipping lanes into a war zone."

Sadie leaned forward, resting her elbows on the glass desk, her fingers steepled beneath her chin.

"Mr. Marcone," Sadie said, her voice cutting through the static with ice-cold clarity. "This isn't Victor Castello. This is Sadie Hayes, Chief Compliance Officer for the Castello estate."

A heavy, suspicious silence hung over the speaker line for several seconds.

"A compliance officer?" Marcone scoffed, a harsh laugh rattling through the connection. "What kind of Mickey Mouse operation are you running down there? Put Victor on the phone. I don't negotiate with clerks."

"You aren't negotiating with a clerk," Sadie replied smoothly, her eyes tracking a live data feed showing the immediate freezing of Marcone’s secondary shell accounts in Delaware. "You're speaking to the person who just liquidated your Delaware shell companies, handed Councilman Vance over to the Department of Justice, and locked you out of every port authority from here to the Atlantic."

The line went dead silent. The swagger in Marcone’s voice evaporated, replaced by the unmistakable chill of realization.

"You... you're the one who gutted Sterling Maritime?" Marcone whispered, the hostility in his tone instantly giving way to profound, paralyzed caution.

"I am," Sadie said, her voice dropping into a sharp, uncompromising register. "And here are your new terms, Mr. Marcone. You will pull every single operative out of our city limits by midnight tonight. You will forfeit all municipal contracts back to the Castello foundation. And if I ever catch so much as a whisper of your syndicate operating within fifty miles of our docks..."

She paused, letting the silence stretch out until the tension on the other end of the line was almost unbearable.

"...I won't just freeze your assets. I’ll hand your entire corporate structure over to the IRS and let them strip you down to your underwear."

Another agonizingly long pause followed. Then, the rough, defeated voice of the rival mob boss came through the speaker, devoid of all defiance.

"Message received," Marcone muttered.

Click.

The line went dead.

Rico stared at Sadie, his eyes wide in utter disbelief, slowly shaking his head. "Remind me never to get on your bad side, boss lady. You just scared a Boston mob boss into retirement in under sixty seconds."

May you like

Sadie closed the active data feeds on her monitor, locked her screen, and stood up, smoothing down her blazer.

"I didn't scare him, Rico," Sadie said, walking toward the private elevator that led up to the master suite. "I just audited him."
