Chapter 14 - THE FORTRESS OF MARBLE AND STEEL

14 -
The autumn wind whipped colorful leaves across the iron gates of the Castello estate, but inside the massive stone fortress, the atmosphere was warmer and more alive than it had ever been in its century-long history.
In the grand foyer, the marble floors shone with a clean, polished brilliance under the amber glow of the crystal chandelier. But nobody was scrubbing them in fear tonight. Instead, the estate was filled with the sound of laughter, clinking crystal glasses, and soft jazz playing from the ballroom down the hall.
It was a celebration—not of a criminal victory, but of the foundation’s annual charity gala, hosting city officials, doctors, university deans, and community leaders who had no idea that the brilliant, elegant woman greeting them at the door in an emerald-green evening gown had once cleaned their hotel rooms and scrubbed their offices.
Sadie stood near the grand staircase, exchanging pleasantries with the chief of pediatric oncology from St. Jude’s Hospital, when she felt a familiar, comforting warmth settle beside her.
Victor stood there, impeccably dressed in a custom tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch. He didn't interrupt her conversation; he simply waited with quiet, absolute patience until the doctor excused himself to grab a drink.
"You clean up well for an ex-maid," Victor murmured, his dark eyes scanning the crowded room filled with the most powerful and respectable people in the state—all of them dancing to a tune written by the Castello foundation.
"You clean up well for a ruthless mob boss," Sadie countered smoothly, taking a sip of sparkling water from a passing silver tray.
Victor let out a low, rich chuckle, taking a sip of his scotch. "You know, if my father were alive to see this estate hosting charity galas for hospital boards and university endowments, he’d probably have a heart attack."
"Your father ran an empire of sand, Victor," Sadie said softly, turning her head to look out over the glittering ballroom. "It washed away every time the tide came in. What we built is made of steel, law, and mathematics. Nobody can touch it."
Victor turned to face her fully, his expression turning serious as he reached out and took her hand in his. The skin of her fingers was smooth, healed, and unbroken.
"They couldn't touch it because you’re guarding the gates," Victor said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register that made the surrounding noise of the gala completely fade away.

Sadie smiled, her fingers intertwining firmly with his. She looked up at the man who had answered a burner phone in a dark hallway, who had destroyed a loan shark with a single word, and who had ultimately given her the keys to a kingdom.
"Always," Sadie whispered.
