Chapter 7 - THE INVITATION

1180 -
Back in Westchester County, the digital alarms on Serena’s security console began to pulse with a low, amber warning light.
Seated at her command center in the lower-level security hub of the estate, Serena watched multiple high-resolution monitor screens displaying the perimeter of the property. The advanced AI-driven surveillance system—which she had personally coded and integrated with military-grade defense protocols—was tracking an unusual anomaly.
"Elena, pull up feed four," Serena instructed calmly without taking her eyes off the primary monitor.
Elena rushed over from the coffee station, her fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard to maximize camera feed four, which overlooked the grand iron gates at the private entrance of the estate.
Zooming in on the high-definition video feed, both women fell silent. Resting on the pristine stone pillar right beside the intercom speaker was a small, exquisitely crafted velvet box, tied with a dark crimson ribbon. There was no delivery van, no courier, and no human footprint visible anywhere near the gates. The security cameras showed a localized blind spot that had been bypassed for precisely three seconds—a feat requiring sophisticated signal jamming and military-grade stealth.
"How is that possible?" Elena whispered, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Our perimeter sensors are tied to satellite tracking and infrared motion detectors. Nothing living can cross that line without triggering a lockdown."
"Nothing biological, perhaps," Serena said thoughtfully, her expression sharpening as she analyzed the telemetry data. "Someone used an optical camouflage drone to drop it right over the sensor threshold. Lucian's signature."
"Should I send the private security detail to sweep the perimeter and detonate it?" Elena asked, her hand hovering over the red emergency lockdown button.
"No," Serena replied steadily, standing up from her chair. "If he wanted to blow us up, the box wouldn't be sitting quietly on the pillar. He wants to send a message. Come with me."
Ten minutes later, accompanied by two armed private security contractors in tactical gear, Serena and Elena walked down the long, winding driveway to retrieve the velvet box. The freezing evening wind whipped through the towering oak trees, but Serena walked with absolute poise, her face an unreadable mask of iron resolve.
She picked up the velvet box, noting its surprising weight, and carried it back inside the fortified panic room of the estate.
Seated at the stainless steel inspection table, Serena carefully untied the crimson ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside rested a single, polished silver pocket watch—the exact heirloom Lucian’s father had given him on his wedding day—resting upon a handwritten note written in familiar, sharp cursive ink.
Serena unfolded the note. The message was brief, chilling, and unmistakably clear:
A king never abandons his crown, my love. And he certainly never loses a war he hasn't yet finished fighting. I am coming for what is mine. Sleep with one eye open.

Elena peered over her shoulder, her breath catching in her throat. "Serena... he's in the country. Or worse, he's closer than we think. We need to pack up and move to the safe house in Zurich immediately."
Serena stared down at the silver pocket watch, slowly running her thumb across the engraved family crest. Instead of panic or fear, a cold, calculated thrill rushed through her veins. He thought he could intimidate her with parlor tricks and nostalgic intimidation tactics. He still viewed her as the obedient, sheltered wife he had left behind in the penthouse.

She closed the velvet box with a sharp click and looked up at her sister with absolute calm.
"We don't run, Elena," Serena said, her voice cutting like glass. "If he wants a war, I will give him a battlefield he will never survive."
