Chapter 5 - WHISPERS IN THE SANCTUARY

1195 -
Three months had passed since the dramatic collapse of the Moretti empire at Mercy General Hospital. The headlines detailing the downfall of Manhattan's most feared mafia syndicate had long since faded from the front pages of the tabloids, replaced by newer scandals and corporate gossip. To the rest of the world, Lucian Moretti was buried beneath decades of federal prison sentences, and his name was whispered only as a cautionary tale of criminal hubris.
But in the quiet, highly secured sanctuary of Serena’s newly established estate in Westchester County, life moved with a peaceful, deliberate rhythm.
Serena sat at a minimalist oak desk in her sunlit home office, the morning light pouring through massive arched windows that overlooked a pristine, private garden. On the screen before her flickered complex financial dashboards, secure encrypted networks, and legal documents finalizing the total liquidation of the remaining Moretti shell companies. She had successfully repurposed the seized criminal assets into a legitimate, multi-billion-dollar philanthropic foundation dedicated to supporting victims of organized crime and domestic abuse—a living monument to the past she had survived and conquered.
A soft knock interrupted her focus, and Elena stepped into the room, holding a tablet with a serious expression on her face.
"You need to see this," Elena said quietly, placing the tablet on the desk and turning the screen toward her sister.
Serena glanced down at the display. It was a secure intelligence report forwarded from an encrypted source within the federal prison system. The subject line read: High-Security Transfer Warning - Lucian Moretti.
"They're moving him?" Serena asked, her voice maintaining its calm, measured composure, though her eyes narrowed slightly.
"Not just moving him," Elena replied, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Three days ago, during a routine transfer between the federal penitentiary in upstate New York and the maximum-security facility in Florence, Colorado, Lucian's transport van was intercepted. Or rather... it vanished."
Serena stood up slowly from her desk, walking over to the window as she processed the gravity of the news. "Vanished? In broad daylight? The Federal Bureau of Prisons doesn't just lose high-value prisoners."
"They do when someone on the inside opens the back door," Elena said grimly. "According to our sources, Marco Vitale managed to secure a plea deal that reduced his sentence, but before he was safely locked away in protective custody, a massive bribe network—funded by hidden accounts we haven't been able to trace—activated a private extraction team. Lucian is gone, Serena. He's out."
A cold spike of adrenaline rushed through Serena’s veins, not out of fear, but out of calculated tactical awareness. She had known from the very beginning that a predator like Lucian Moretti would never simply accept defeat lying down. Prison walls and federal guards were mere inconveniences to a man who had controlled half the infrastructure of the eastern seaboard. He had regrouped, slipped through the cracks, and now he was out in the world again, driven by a singular, burning obsession: reclaiming his son, and exacting vengeance on the woman who had brought his empire to its knees.
"How long do we have before he finds us?" Serena asked calmly, her mind instantly shifting into defense and counter-strategy mode.
"Not long," Elena answered, tapping the screen to reveal a second encrypted file. "Our security grid flagged an unauthorized digital probe attempting to breach our firewall less than twenty minutes ago. It originated from a secure IP address routed through Zurich—the exact same digital signature Lucian used to manage his personal offshore communications."

Serena turned away from the window, her gaze locking onto the baby monitor sitting on the mahogany shelf across the room. On the small screen, little Nico—now three months old, growing stronger and more alert by the day—was peacefully sleeping in his crib, completely unaware of the dark storm gathering on the horizon.
"Let him try," Serena said softly, a dangerous, unyielding fire igniting deep within her eyes. "He thinks he built this game, Elena. But he taught me how to play it. And this time, I won't just break his empire—I will bury him so deep he'll never see the light of day again."
