Chapter 10 - THE RECKONING IN THE DARK

1290 -
The cavernous hallways of the Westchester estate were dead silent, save for the rhythmic, heavy thud of heavy-soled combat boots moving with practiced military precision across the polished hardwood floors.
Lucian Moretti led his four-man tactical strike team through the pitch-black corridors, his gloved hand firmly gripping a silenced tactical carbine. He moved like a ghost through the home he once owned, his tactical night-vision goggles casting a ghostly green hue over his hardened, unyielding features. Every corridor, every corner, every architectural nuance was etched into his memory. He knew the blind spots. He knew the structural weaknesses.
And he knew exactly where the master bedroom and nursery were located.
"Split up," Lucian whispered into his comm-link, signaling Marco and the two Sicilian operatives to take the western wing while he personally cleared the main central staircase leading to the upper residential level. "Secure the perimeter of the nursery. Do not harm anyone unless they present a direct threat. I want my son untouched, and I want Serena alive when I talk to her."
Lucian reached the base of the grand staircase, stepping silently onto the plush velvet runner that muffled his footsteps. The emergency red LED strip lighting cast long, dramatic shadows up the sweeping steps, creating an atmosphere of a battlefield waiting to explode.
He took three steps upward before he stopped dead in his tracks.
Standing at the landing of the staircase, bathed in the crimson emergency glow, was Serena.
She wore a simple dark tactical turtleneck and fitted trousers, her long hair tied back neatly in a ponytail. In her right hand, held with steady, unshakeable poise, was a customized firearm pointed directly at the center of Lucian’s chest. There was no fear in her eyes, no hesitation, and no grief—only an absolute, chilling stillness that made Lucian’s breath hitch in his throat.
Lucian lowered his tactical rifle slightly, resting the barrel against his thigh as he stared up at her. A complex mixture of awe, anger, and painful longing washed over his features.
"You always did look magnificent when you were angry, Serena," Lucian said, his voice echoing softly through the empty, darkened hall. "Though I must admit, holding a gun on your own husband is a bit dramatic, even for you."
"My husband is rotting in a federal penitentiary or dead in an alley," Serena replied, her voice steady, cold, and echoing with absolute finality. "You are nothing more than an uninvited trespasser who violated a restraining order and broke into a private residence. Take another step up these stairs, Lucian, and I will put a bullet through your heart without a second thought."
Lucian didn't step back. Instead, he took two deliberate steps upward, closing the distance between them, ignoring the muzzle pointed squarely at his chest.
"You think a bullet can solve this, Serena?" Lucian asked, his dark eyes burning with an intense, desperate fire. "You think you can erase seven years of our lives, hide behind federal judges, and lock me away from my son with a signature on a piece of paper? I built an empire from the blood and ash of this city, and you honestly believe a simple restraining order is going to keep me from my bloodline?"
"You built an empire of lies and violence, Lucian," Serena countered, her finger resting lightly against the trigger, her breathing measured and calm. "And the moment you chose your mistress and your Sicilian masters over the birth of your own son, you forfeited every right to call yourself a father. You aren't here for Nico. You're here to salvage your fragile ego because a woman outsmarted you at your own game."
Lucian stopped just three steps below her, towering over her on the grand staircase. He looked deep into her eyes, searching for the terrified, submissive young woman he had married seven years ago. But he found nothing—only an equal, a rival, and an adversary who had outmatched him entirely.
"You're right," Lucian whispered, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips as he raised his hands slowly to show he wasn't reaching for a weapon. "You outsmarted me, Serena. You played the long game, infiltrated my inner circle, and executed a coup that textbooks will study for decades. I respect that. I admire that."

He took one final step up, bringing his face inches from the barrel of her gun.
"Which is precisely why you're coming back with me."
