Chapter 6 - THE GHOSTS OF ROME

1250 -

Thousands of miles away from the quiet Westchester estate, deep within the ancient, labyrinthine alleys of Rome’s historic Trastevere district, a heavily hooded figure sat in the shadowed corner of an underground trattoria. The air was thick with the rich scent of espresso, tobacco, and aged wine, but the man sitting at the corner table touched neither food nor drink.

Lucian Moretti leaned forward, the harsh overhead light casting deep, dramatic shadows across his hardened features. His dark hair was slightly longer than it had been in New York, and a rough, untamed beard shadowed his jawline, but the chilling intensity in his eyes remained entirely unchanged. Standing beside him in the dim alcove was Marco Vitale, looking equally worn by the chaotic events of the past few weeks.

"The federal transport diversion cost us half our remaining capital, boss," Marco muttered in Italian, keeping his voice low so the bartender sweeping the distant tile floor wouldn't overhear. "Every contact we had in the Italian Senate has gone dark, terrified of being linked to your escape. If the DOJ realizes you're on European soil, Interpol will red-flag every airport and seaport from Sicily to Milan within twenty-four hours."

Lucian didn't look up from the tarnished silver pocket watch resting between his palms—a family heirloom passed down from his father, bearing the engraved crest of the Moretti dynasty. "Let them look," Lucian said coldly, his voice vibrating with a quiet, terrifying resolve. "Governments, agencies, Interpol—they are all bureaucratic illusions. They operate on paper, laws, and jurisdiction. But true power doesn't live in courtrooms, Marco. It lives in blood, loyalty, and leverage."

"And what leverage do we have left, Lucian?" Marco asked with a hint of desperate realism. "Your accounts are frozen, your properties are seized, and the federal government has Serena and your son locked behind an impenetrable fortress of private security and digital surveillance in upstate New York. We are effectively ghosts."

Lucian slowly snapped the pocket watch shut, the metallic click echoing sharply in the quiet alcove. He raised his dark eyes to meet Marco's. "Ghosts are much harder to kill, Marco. And they can go places living men cannot."

He stood up, towering over the table, and pulled his dark wool coat tightly around his shoulders. "Serena thinks she outsmarted me. She believes that by handing my empire to the federal prosecutors, she has permanently separated me from my bloodline. But she made one critical miscalculation."

"And what is that?" Marco asked, following him toward the heavy wooden exit door.

"She thinks I built my empire solely on money and drugs," Lucian said, stepping out into the cool, damp Roman night air. "She forgot that long before I was a businessman or a syndicate boss, my grandfather taught me how the old families of southern Italy operated when everything was stolen from them. There are ancient alliances, dormant blood oaths, and hidden vaults across Europe that the DOJ's forensic accountants couldn't find in a thousand years."

Marco fell into step beside him as they navigated the cobblestone labyrinth toward a waiting black sedan parked near the Tiber River. "You're planning to rebuild?"

"Not rebuild," Lucian corrected, a chilling smile touching the corner of his lips as the headlights of the sedan flickered to life. "Retake. Serena wants a war of intelligence and strategy? I will give her a masterclass she will never forget. Pack our bags for Sicily. We are going home."
