Chapter 12 - ASHES TO EMPIRES

1170 -

Six months after the dramatic raid at the Westchester estate, the federal courtroom in lower Manhattan was packed to absolute capacity. Journalists, federal prosecutors, financial analysts, and high-ranking law enforcement officials filled every available seat, watching history unfold in real time.

Seated at the defense table, wearing a standard orange federal jumpsuit instead of his signature tailored Italian suits, Lucian Moretti looked older, weathered by months of solitary confinement and the absolute finality of his defeat. Across the aisle, flanked by her legal team and her sister Elena, sat Serena Moretti. She wore an immaculate charcoal-grey suit, her posture poised, elegant, and radiating absolute confidence.

The presiding federal judge adjusted his glasses, looking down sternly from the elevated bench before delivering the final verdict.

"Lucian Moretti, based on the overwhelming, irrefutable evidence provided by federal investigators, cooperating witnesses, and the comprehensive financial ledgers recovered during the recent multi-jurisdictional raids, this court finds you guilty on all counts of racketeering, international money laundering, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice," the judge announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the silent courtroom. "You are hereby sentenced to consecutive life terms in the federal penitentiary at Florence, Colorado, without the possibility of parole. Court is adjourned."

The heavy gavel struck the wood with a sharp, definitive crack.

Lucian didn't flinch. As federal marshals stood up to escort him away, he slowly turned his head toward the gallery. His dark eyes locked onto Serena’s gaze one final time across the courtroom. There was no anger left in his expression—only a profound, haunting realization of what he had thrown away for the sake of power and pride.

Serena met his gaze steadily, without malice, without triumph, and without hesitation. She gave him a single, silent nod of closure, then turned her attention forward.

The marshals pulled Lucian backward, leading him through the heavy wooden side doors and out of her life forever. The Moretti syndicate was gone, its leaders imprisoned, its wealth redistributed, and its dark legacy buried beneath the weight of undeniable justice.
