Chapter 9 - The Reunion in Room 412-9

The morning sun broke through the clouds over Nashville, casting a warm, golden glow through the fourth-floor windows of Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.

Inside Room 412, the quiet beep of the heart monitor was steady and peaceful.

Elsie lay in the high-tech hospital bed, her color fully restored, a small pink bandage over the IV site on her arm. She was happily eating a bowl of warm oatmeal, giggling softly as Micah made funny faces with a stuffed yellow bear sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Delaney sat in the vinyl armchair beside the bed, wearing a clean hospital gown, her hands resting softly in her lap.

The door pushed open gently.

Rowan walked in carrying a bag of fresh hot cinnamon rolls and a large box of apple juice boxes.

"DADDY!" Elsie squeaked, sitting up straight and reaching out her tiny arms.

Rowan set the food on the table, leaned over the bed, and pulled both Elsie and Micah into a warm, gentle embrace, holding them close against his chest.

"Hey, princess," Rowan whispered, kissing her cheek. "How are you feeling?"

"My tummy doesn't hurt anymore," Elsie smiled, showing her tiny front teeth. "Micah said you got the bad guys!"

Rowan looked up at Micah, reaching over to ruffle his son's blond hair. "Your brother is the real hero, Elsie. He made the most important phone call in the world."

Micah looked down at his sneakers, a proud, timid smile spreading across his face. "I remembered the phone number you wrote on my nightstand card, Dad."

Delaney stood up slowly from her chair, stepping closer to Rowan. Her eyes were rimmed with red, filled with a deep, complex mixture of gratitude and leftover sorrow.

"Rowan... can we talk outside for a minute?" Delaney asked softly.

May you like

Rowan nodded, letting go of the kids. "We'll be right outside the door, okay guys? Save a cinnamon roll for me."

They stepped into the quiet, sunlit hallway of the pediatric floor.
