Chapter 8 - The Charity Gala-8

The grand ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Hotel was filled with soft orchestral music, sparkling crystal chandeliers, and hundreds of Nashville’s most prominent politicians, business executives, and socialites dressed in formal black-tie attire.
At the center of the main head table stood Harold Sterling—a distinguished-looking man in his late fifties with slick silver hair, wearing a tailored tuxedo, holding a glass of expensive champagne as he laughed with a group of city council members.
The heavy double oak doors of the ballroom swung open.
Rowan Mercer walked in first, dressed in his dirt-stained work coat, his hair disheveled, a dark purple bruise blooming across his jaw. Walking right behind him were Detective Miller, Officer Vance, and four federal agents clad in dark suits.
The orchestral music slowly ground to a halt as guests turned to stare in utter shock at the dirt-covered man marching across the plush red carpet.
Harold Sterling’s smile faltered. He set his champagne glass down on the white tablecloth, his eyes widening in sudden, panicked recognition as he saw Detective Miller holding a red manila folder.
"Harold Sterling!" Detective Miller’s voice echoed loudly across the silent ballroom.
Sterling forced a polite, patronizing laugh, stepping away from the table. "Detective Miller? What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is a private charity event for the Children's Hospital!"
Rowan stepped directly in front of Sterling, stopping less than three feet from the high-ranking official.
"My children were at that hospital tonight, Sterling," Rowan said, his voice carrying a lethal, icy calm. "My three-year-old daughter was in septic shock because you sent a psychotic ex-convict to starve them in their own home."
Sterling’s face went completely pale, his hands trembling slightly as he reached toward his jacket pocket. "I... I have no idea what you're talking about! Security! Escort these men out!"
"Don't move your hand, Harold," Miller bared his sidearm slightly. "We have the 1998 logbook from Vault 14, signed by you and Arthur Vance. We have the digital wire transfers from your private offshore account to Victor Vance’s defense attorney. And Victor just gave a full audio confession inside the federal building ten minutes ago."
Gasping and horrified whispers broke out among the wealthy guests. Several city council members immediately backed away from Sterling as if he were poisonous.
"Harold Sterling," Officer Vance announced, stepping forward with heavy steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, extortion, corporate fraud, and double-count child endangerment."
Sterling looked around the room, seeing his prestigious life, his political power, and his reputation shatter into millions of unrecoverable pieces.
Officer Vance pulled Sterling's arms behind his back, snapping the cold steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, definitive CLICK.

Rowan looked into the face of the man who had ordered his family’s nightmare, feeling no hatred left—only a deep, cleansing sense of complete justice.
"Take him away," Rowan said softly.
