One year later.
The Federal District Court in downtown Nashville was packed with news cameras, legal teams, and citizens.
The final sentencing hearing for The United States v. Harold Sterling & Victor Vance had drawn national media attention, exposing the decades-long corruption within the state corrections system.
Rowan, Delaney, Micah, and Elsie sat in the front row of the gallery alongside Detective Miller and Officer Vance.
The honorable Judge Rebecca Thorne slammed her heavy wooden gavel down onto the desk.
"Will the defendants please stand?" Judge Thorne ordered, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom.
Harold Sterling and Victor Vance stood up, both wearing dark orange prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles bound by heavy steel chains. Sterling looked hollow, gray, and broken, while Victor stared blankly at the polished floor.
"Harold Sterling," Judge Thorne stated sternly. "You used your high public office to orchestrate a campaign of terror, extortion, and child endangerment driven by unadulterated greed. You left two innocent young children in a locked residence without food or water to secure stolen funds."
Judge Thorne adjusted her spectacles.
"I sentence you to forty-five years in federal maximum-security prison, without the possibility of parole."
Sterling slumped into his seat, burying his face in his trembling hands as his high-priced defense team packed their briefcases in complete silence.
"Victor Vance," the judge continued. "You are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without parole."
As the federal marshals escorted both men toward the rear exit, Harold Sterling turned his head slightly, his eyes locking onto Rowan Mercer.
