Chapter 8 - The Secret Adoption Ploy

-8-

Ryan was escorted out of the hospital by the police officers and private security guards within minutes, his protests swallowed up by the sterile hum of the third-floor corridor. Tossed out onto the concrete pavement outside the emergency entrance like unwanted trash, he sat in his idling Mercedes parked in the transit lane, staring up at the third-floor windows of Denver General Hospital. His chest ached with a heavy, suffocating pain, but his mind was spinning with the image he had caught on the video tablet down the hall: a legal document bearing a corporate letterhead he recognized all too well—Sterling Holdings, his own company, cross-referenced with a confidential adoption agency file.

What was Daniel doing with adoption files? Ethan was his nephew, born of my blood. Why would my family even consider adoption papers unless... unless something else was happening behind the scenes that Ryan didn't know about?

Desperate, humiliated, and running out of allies, Ryan pulled out his phone and dialed the only person who might still pick up—Celeste, the corporate associate he had been planning to leave me for, the woman who had shared those luxurious whiskey toasts with him on the Aspen balcony.

The phone rang three times before a cool, detached voice answered on the other end. “Hello?”

“Celeste! Thank God,” Ryan breathed out, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. “Listen to me, everything has blown up. Emma didn't die, her brother Daniel has frozen all my accounts, slapped me with a restraining order, and barred me from the hospital. I need you to meet me. We need to figure out our next move—where are you?”

There was a long, excruciating pause on the other end of the line. When Celeste finally spoke, her voice lacked any warmth, any flirtation, any sign of the affection she had lavished on him during their weekend in the mountains.

“Ryan,” Celeste said smoothly, as if she were reading from a corporate memo. “Let’s get one thing straight. I am an associate at Mercer Hale’s rival firm, and my career trajectory does not include attaching myself to a disgraced, legally ruined executive facing federal wire fraud and criminal negligence charges.”

Ryan’s blood ran cold. “What? Celeste, what are you talking about? We were together in Aspen! You said you loved my ambition!”

“Ambition is one thing, Ryan; sheer stupidity is another,” Celeste replied with a chilling laugh. “Do you really think I didn't know about the forty thousand dollars you siphoned into that Nevada account? Do you think I didn't know Daniel Hale has been auditing your corporate division for the last three months? I was gathering intelligence for your board of directors the entire time, Ryan. You were so blinded by your own ego that you didn't realize you were the mark.”

The phone clicked dead in his ear.

The silence inside the Mercedes felt deafening. Ryan sat frozen, staring at the dead screen of his phone as the full, devastating magnitude of his destruction washed over him. He had been played. Not just by Daniel, not just by the legal system, but by the very woman he had betrayed me for. He was utterly alone, completely bankrupt, legally barred from his wife and son, and facing criminal charges that could land him in federal prison for years.

Yet, as he started the engine and drove blindly away from the hospital, he didn't know the most terrifying part of the puzzle. Back inside room 312 of Denver General Hospital, I was sitting up in the hospital bed, propped up by pillows, looking at the adoption dossier Daniel had just placed on my lap. The baby sleeping peacefully in the bassinet beside me wasn't just Ethan—and the secret my family was hiding from Ryan wasn't just a divorce. It was a revelation about my true parentage, a massive corporate inheritance, and a dark family secret that would soon drag Ryan into a courtroom battle he could never possibly survive.
