Chapter 11 - The Interrogation

-11-
While I rested in the secure sanctuary of room 312 under my family’s watchful eye, Ryan Sterling was enduring a very different kind of Monday morning reality. He sat in a cold, fluorescent-lit holding room at the downtown Denver police precinct, handcuffed to a bolted metal table. His designer suit was wrinkled, his hair was unwashed, and the arrogant, self-assured smirk that had defined his executive persona was entirely gone, replaced by hollow, bloodshot eyes and a look of mounting sheer terror.
The heavy steel door swung open, and two detectives stepped inside, followed by a federal prosecutor carrying a thick stack of blue-backed financial documents and criminal indictments. They didn't offer him coffee. They didn't ask how he was doing. They simply dropped the heavy files onto the metal table with a dull, echoing thud.
“Mr. Parker,” the lead detective began, taking a seat opposite him and clicking a ballpoint pen. “Let’s go over your timeline for last weekend one more time. Specifically, the forty hours between the moment you abandoned your postpartum wife on a nursery floor and the moment you returned home expecting a normal life.”
“I want my lawyer,” Ryan croaked, his voice cracking. “I haven't committed any crime. I went on a pre-planned birthday trip! Marital friction isn't a federal offense!”
The federal prosecutor leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table and giving Ryan a cold, pitiless smile. “Abandoning a medically vulnerable spouse in critical condition, actively denying her emergency medical care, siphoning forty thousand dollars of marital funds into a secret offshore account to fund an adulterous relationship, and operating an enterprise built on falsified equity declarations tied to stolen venture capital assets? No, Mr. Parker, that isn't just marital friction. That’s a combination of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and criminal negligence resulting in near-fatal endangerment.”
The prosecutor slid a single document across the table. Ryan looked down. It was an emergency asset forfeiture order signed by a federal judge just two hours earlier, freezing every remaining corporate account, revoking his executive license, and officially dissolving Sterling Holdings under the superior authority of the master Mercer Trust.
“Sterling Holdings is dead,” the prosecutor said flatly. “Your assets have been seized. Your bank accounts are empty. And your corporate partners have already turned over every encrypted email and financial ledger proving you embezzled funds from subsidiary accounts to pay for your mistress’s luxury lifestyle.”
Ryan felt the room spin around him. “No... that’s impossible. Mercer Hale doesn't own my company—I built that from scratch! I earned every cent!”

“You earned nothing,” a cold, commanding voice echoed from the doorway.
Ryan snapped his head around. Standing in the open doorway, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Daniel Hale, was Alejandro Mercer himself. The billionaire titan strode into the interrogation room with the effortless, crushing weight of an apex predator stepping into a cage with a wounded animal. He wore a flawless charcoal three-piece suit, his silver-streaked hair neat, and his grey eyes fixed on Ryan with an expression of absolute, freezing contempt.
