Chapter 12 - The Billionaire’s Entry

-12-

Ryan shrank back against the bolted metal chair as Alejandro Mercer stepped into the cramped interrogation room, the sheer aura of power radiating from the billionaire making the air feel thick and difficult to breathe. Ryan had spent years dreaming of being in the same room as Alejandro Mercer, imagining a polite handshake across a mahogany boardroom table while securing millions in venture capital funding for his startup. He had never imagined meeting his idol like this—handcuffed to a metal table, stripped of his company, his wealth, and his freedom, while the man he had tried to emulate looked down at him as if he were an insignificant insect.

“A-Mr. Mercer,” Ryan stammered, his voice trembling uncontrollably as he tried to pull his handcuffed hands down beneath the table. “I... I didn't know you were involved in this. There’s been a massive misunderstanding—my brother-in-law Daniel, he’s twisting the facts, he’s weaponizing his firm against me—”

Alejandro did not even acknowledge Ryan’s stuttered excuses. He simply walked over to the metal table, pulled out the opposite chair with slow, deliberate grace, and sat down directly across from him. He rested his forearms on the table, lacing his fingers together, his piercing grey eyes locking onto Ryan’s terrified gaze with chilling intensity.

“There is no misunderstanding, Mr. Parker,” Alejandro said, his deep, resonant voice cutting through the sterile room like a razor-sharp blade. “For the past three years, my compliance division has tracked every fraudulent subsidiary, every inflated equity valuation, and every unauthorized wire transfer originating from your so-called ‘self-made’ startup. You didn't build an empire, Ryan. You built a house of cards on stolen capital and forged ledgers, operating under the delusional belief that nobody would ever look beneath the surface.”

“That’s a lie!” Ryan protested frantically, his voice rising in panic. “My initial seed funding came from independent investors! I have the paperwork!”

“You have forged paperwork,” Daniel corrected coldly, stepping forward and tossing a certified financial audit report onto the table next to the indictments. “The initial seed capital that launched your company six years ago was wired from a dormant subsidiary trust belonging to the Mercer estate—a fund accidentally misallocated during a routine portfolio restructuring. When you took that money, you signed a binding subordination agreement granting our trust absolute reversionary rights in the event of executive malfeasance or gross ethical breach.”

Ryan stared at the document in stunned disbelief. Every single cornerstone of his professional identity—the startup he bragged about, the wealth he flaunted, the superiority he lorded over me—wasn't his at all. It had been borrowed against a foundation he had no right to touch, funded by the very man sitting across from him.

“And as for your personal life,” Alejandro continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low whisper that made Ryan’s blood run cold, “you stood in a hospital hallway and abandoned a mother whose body was failing while you went off to drink whiskey and pose on balconies with a woman who was actively selling your secrets to our corporate board. You treated my flesh and blood—and the mother of my child—like disposable trash.”

Ryan’s breath hitched. The words hit him like a physical blow. My flesh and blood.

“What... what are you talking about?” Ryan choked out, his eyes darting wildly between Alejandro and Daniel. “What does Emma have to do with you? She’s my wife!”

Alejandro stood up slowly, straightening his jacket with quiet, absolute authority. He looked down at Ryan with a look of profound, icy pity.

“Not anymore, Mr. Parker,” Alejandro said softly. “Your lease on her life has officially expired. Enjoy your stay in federal custody. You’re going to have a very long time to contemplate the true cost of your ambition.”
