Chapter 10 - The Billionaire’s Shadow

-10-

Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket, glanced at the encrypted caller ID flashing across the screen, and immediately tapped the speakerphone icon. The deep, resonant, authoritative voice of Alejandro Mercer filled the quiet hospital room, cutting through the sterile hum of the medical monitors with effortless command.

“Daniel,” Alejandro said without preamble. “I’ve reviewed the preliminary medical logs from Dr. Vance and the forensic asset reports regarding the Sterling Holdings liquidation. Is Emma stable?”

“She’s awake and recovering, Mr. Mercer,” Daniel replied respectfully. “We’ve secured the protective orders, and Ryan has been completely cut off from all corporate and personal assets. The federal indictment for criminal negligence is locked in for Monday morning.”

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. When Alejandro spoke again, his tone shifted, dropping the formal corporate detachment and carrying a strange, heavy intensity that made the hair on my arms stand up.

“And the child? The boy?”

“He’s sleeping right here in the bassinet beside her,” Daniel said, glancing over at me with a reassuring nod. “He’s healthy, strong, and completely safe from Ryan’s reach.”

“Good,” Alejandro said softly. “Because what Ryan Sterling doesn't know—and what we must ensure remains strictly classified until the corporate dissolution is finalized—is that the boy’s lineage is tied directly to the master trust we established three years ago following the laboratory audit at St. Jude. He is not Ryan’s son, Daniel. He never was. And when the courts unravel Ryan’s fraudulent startup history next week, he’s going to discover that the very empire he stole and exploited was built on a foundation he never had any legal right to touch.”

I clutched the edge of the blanket, my breath catching in my throat as I listened to the billionaire titan speak with such absolute, unyielding authority. The cosmic irony of it all was staggering. Ryan had spent six years desperate to impress men like Alejandro Mercer, begging for venture capital funding, bragging about his corporate status, and treating me like a burden because I didn't fit his high-society aesthetic. Now, the man whose blood ran through my son’s veins was the very person orchestrating Ryan’s total, unmitigated destruction.

“What are your instructions, Mr. Mercer?” Daniel asked quietly.

“Let Ryan squirm,” Alejandro commanded, his voice dropping to a cold, lethal whisper. “Let him try to hire cheap defense attorneys with frozen credit cards. Let him realize that his mistresses, his luxury vacations, and his arrogant little birthday trips have cost him everything. Once the federal court officially dissolves Sterling Holdings on Monday, I will personally visit Room 312 at Denver General Hospital. It’s time we ensure Emma and the boy are placed under the permanent, unbreakable protection of the Mercer estate.”

The call disconnected with a soft click.

The hospital room fell back into a profound, heavy silence. My mother walked over, gently resting her hand on my shoulder, while Daniel slid the confidential trust documents back into the manila folder. I looked down at little Ethan, who stirred slightly in his bassinet, letting out a soft, contented yawn before settling back into a deep, peaceful sleep.

The nightmare on the nursery floor felt miles away now. The man who had left me to die while he drank whiskey on a luxury resort balcony was running out of time, money, and options. Little did Ryan know, his darkest hour wasn't even close to finished—because when Monday morning arrived, the billionaire he had spent his life trying to impress was coming to collect everything Ryan had stolen, leaving him with nothing but the ash of his own unforgivable sins.
