Inside the idling vehicle, the digital clock on the console read 2:15 p.m.

Through the rear observation monitor, we watched Daniel’s heavy white pickup truck turn the corner and pull aggressively into the driveway of our Arlington home. Beside his truck was Megan’s sleek sports car, bought with funds siphoned from my grandfather's trust dividend accounts.

"He's inside," Marcus reported, tapping his earpiece to synchronize our audio intercept feed with the micro-transponders I had left inside the kitchen clock and the table surface.

The audio feed crackled to life with crisp, high-definition audio clarity. We heard the heavy front door open, followed by the metallic click of Daniel’s work boots against the hardwood entryway.

"Megan, get in here!" Daniel’s voice boomed through the speakers, arrogant and commanding. "She left her stuff. She probably went crying to her sister. Check the refrigerator—see if she left dinner prepared before she ran off."

"Daniel, look at the table," Megan’s voice chimed in, slightly hesitated. "Her ring is sitting right there. And there's a paper under it."

A brief silence followed, punctuated by the rustle of the hospital discharge papers being lifted from the granite surface.

"Mercy General Emergency Department..." Daniel read aloud, his tone shifting from arrogance to irritation. "Second-degree thermal burns... thermal trauma... What a dramatic liar. She thinks a hospital note is going to scare me?"

"Daniel, wait," Megan suddenly gasped, her voice tightening with a sharp edge of panic. "Look at the back of the ring. Why is it glowing red?"

"What are you talking about—"

Daniel’s sentence was cut short by a sharp, high-pitched electronic chime that vibrated through the audio feed like an industrial alarm.

Over the intercept monitor, we watched the cellular towers on the street pylon light up with continuous data traffic. In real-time, Daniel's mobile device began emitting a rapid sequence of warning pings—a relentless, concussive barrage of system notifications that shattered the quiet of the kitchen.
