Chapter 10 - The Reversal Protocol-10

The rain had completely stopped by the time Marcus Reed and I stepped out onto the wide granite steps of the federal courthouse in Washington. The afternoon sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, painting the skyline in a bright, vibrant gold that felt like a baptism for my future.

Marcus looked at me, a deep sense of relief softening the hard lines around his sharp eyes. "What did he say to you in there?"

"Nothing that matters anymore, Marcus," I said, drawing a deep breath of the clean, cool air into my lungs. My chest didn't hurt anymore. The phantom weight of my six-year silence was completely gone. "He’s a ghost now. A ghost haunting a concrete cell."

"We’re going home, Clara," Marcus said, wrapping his arm around my shoulder with warm, professional respect as we walked down the steps toward our command vehicle. "To the valley cottage. Your grandfather's estate is finally fully cleared."

"Not home yet," a sharp, clear voice spoke from the shadow of a marble pillar at the base of the courthouse steps.

We stopped, our bodies tensing instinctively as our security detail formed a loose perimeter around the vehicle. Stepping out from the foggy shadows was Julianna Croft—the daughter of Senator Julian Croft, the former chairman of the State Urban Development Committee.

She wasn't in handcuffs, nor was she wearing an inmate jumpsuit. She wore a flawless beige trench coat, her dark hair perfectly styled, a sleek leather briefcase in her hand. Beside her stood two men in sharp dark suits with earpieces—private security, not federal marshals.

"Julianna," Marcus growled, stepping between me and the Senator's daughter, his hand instinctively dropping toward his holstered service weapon. "The state judicial committee finalized your family's asset liquidations three hours ago."

"They did," Julianna smiled, a cool, untouchable expression that radiated absolute political immunity beneath her designer sunglasses. "Until forty-five minutes ago, when my father’s legal team finalized a separate immunity agreement with the Department of Justice. In exchange for his testimony against the corporate board of the Nicosia syndicate, all charges against me have been permanently dropped. I’m a completely free woman, Agent Reed."
