Chapter 8 - THE BLACKOUT PROTOCOL

8

Within three seconds of the courthouse lights cutting out, the security protocols Nathan had hardcoded into his own encrypted mobile network kicked in with silent efficiency. His personal comms unit vibrated sharply against his collarbone, accompanied by a high-priority tactical alert pulsing in red Morse code across his watch screen.

WARNING: Localized EMP discharge detected. Grid failure across downtown D.C. Communications jammed.

Nathan didn't panic. He moved with the cold, lethal precision of a man who had spent months preparing for an invisible war. He reached into his coat, drew his encrypted satellite phone, and keyed the direct emergency channel to David.

"David," Nathan spoke into the comms unit, his voice dropping into a low, tactical register. "Report."

There was only heavy, abrasive static on the other end of the line. Then, through the white noise, came the sound of distant, muffled gunfire and the shattering of reinforced glass.

“Sir—we’re compromised,” David’s voice barked over the crackling static, breathless and strained. “The convoy outside the courthouse... it’s not federal security. A professional extraction team just hit the transport blockade. They’re using military-grade frequency jammers!”

Before Nathan could answer, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst inward with a deafening crash.

Four figures in matte-black tactical gear poured into the room, their movements synchronized, silent, and terrifyingly efficient. They weren't wearing police insignia or federal badges; across their tactical vests gleamed a familiar, sinister emblem—a stylized golden eagle clutching a lightning bolt, overlaid with a crimson slash.

Aegis Security Solutions—or rather, the splinter faction that hadn't been rounded up in the initial federal sweep.

"Get down!" Evelyn screamed, dropping beneath the defense table as the first tactical operative raised an assault rifle fitted with an integrated suppressor and swept the room with an infrared laser sight.

Nathan didn't dive under the table. Instead, he grabbed the heavy mahogany chair in front of him and hurled it with explosive force directly into the path of the lead operative, buying himself precious milliseconds to draw his concealed Sig Sauer pistol.

CRACK! CRACK!

Two rapid shots pierced the dim courtroom air. The lead operative stumbled backward, his tactical chest rig absorbing the impact, but his rifle clattered uselessly onto the marble floor. The remaining three operatives instantly pivoted, training their red laser dots directly onto Nathan’s chest.

Before they could pull the trigger, a blinding flash of white light exploded from the overhead emergency sprinkler pipes—not water, but a high-intensity tactical strobe grenade that had been remotely triggered by Nathan's backup network.

The operatives blinded by the sudden flash, shouted in confusion and swung their weapons blindly.

Nathan moved like a shadow, sliding across the polished wood floor beneath the bench, coming up directly behind the second operative. With a swift, brutal strike of his pistol grip against the base of the man's helmet, he dropped him instantly to the floor.

He grabbed the fallen operative's encrypted tactical radio from his shoulder strap and keyed the broadcast button.

"David, status!" Nathan barked over the channel.

“We’re holding the subterranean garage exit!” David’s voice roared over heavy gunfire in the background. “Sir, you need to get out of that courtroom now! They’re not here to rescue Isabella... they’re here to sanitize the evidence!”

Nathan turned his head sharply toward the witness stand.

Isabella was gone.

In the chaotic seconds of the tactical flash-bang deployment, someone had cut her handcuffs, broken her through the side exit door leading into the judges' private stairwell, and vanished into the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the federal building.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the bench, ignoring the remaining tactical operatives who were now recovering their vision, and sprinted through the reinforced oak door into the pitch-black stairwell, plunging headfirst into the darkness below.
