Chapter 3 - THE MIDNIGHT VISITOR

3
The rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the master study on the second floor, turning the dark Virginia woods outside into a chaotic blur of shifting shadows. Inside, the room was dimly lit by a single brass desk lamp, casting a warm pool of light over stacks of leather-bound financial ledgers and antique globes.
Nathan sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring at the glowing monitor of his secondary terminal. The cross-referencing script David had written was running deep background checks through encrypted federal archives, scraping historical employment records, unredacted military deployment logs, and covert intelligence payrolls.
Suddenly, the progress bar on the screen flashed green.
Match Found.
Nathan leaned forward, his eyes narrowing as lines of data began to populate the screen. The profile belonged to none other than Richard Vance—Nathan’s own estranged cousin and the current Vice Chairman of Vance Holdings' international acquisitions division. For years, Richard had played the role of the amiable, harmless family member content to sit on the board and collect his quarterly dividends while Nathan did the heavy lifting of building the empire.
According to the unredacted federal database files Nathan had just unlocked, Richard’s resume looked very different. Ten years ago, before joining the corporate ranks, Richard had been a senior intelligence liaison for a secretive, privatized defense contractor known as Aegis Security Solutions—a black-ops consulting firm specializing in economic espionage, political destabilization, and corporate governance manipulation.
And right beneath Richard's personnel file, another name appeared—a name that made Nathan's heart skip a beat.
Isabella Vance (nee Moreau).
Not a minor socialite from Richmond. According to her classified dossier, Isabella Moreau was a former operative trained in psychological operations, tactical infiltration, and social engineering at a private intelligence facility in Zurich. Her marriage to Nathan wasn't a whirlwind romance; it was a meticulously planned deep-cover assignment executed over eighteen months of calculated encounters designed to exploit Nathan's known weakness: his profound loneliness and his desperate desire to provide a maternal figure for young Maya after the tragic death of his first wife.
"They played a long game," Nathan murmured to himself, his fingers curling into a tight fist against the desk. "A very long game."
Before he could dig deeper into the files, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the study—not the house-wide security klaxon, but a low, rhythmic chime emanating from the private elevator terminal in the corner of the room.
Warning: Perimeter Breach. Sector 4 - West Gate.
Nathan instantly stood up, his hand sliding beneath the edge of the mahogany desk where a biometric-locked compartment concealed a matte-black Sig Sauer pistol and a secure tactical comms unit. He tapped his earpiece.
"David, report," Nathan said sharply, walking toward the private elevator doors.
There was a moment of static over the comms channel, followed by the sound of muffled shouting and the dull, heavy thud of a physical struggle.
“Sir—we’ve got movement at the west gatehouse!” David’s voice crackled through the earpiece, breathless and laced with sudden urgency. “It’s not an electronic breach. Someone forced the manual hydraulic bypass using a high-yield thermal cutting torch. Cameras in Sector 4 just went dark.”
"How many?" Nathan demanded, stepping into the private elevator and swiping his thumb across the biometric panel to descend directly into the lower courtyard.
“At least four units, heavily armed, wearing tactical gear with no insignia,” David reported rapidly. “They’re bypassing standard entry protocols and heading straight for the subterranean server room. They’re trying to wipe the physical drives before our encrypted backups finish syncing to the cloud!”
The elevator doors slid open with a soft hiss, revealing the dim, cavernous expanse of the lower courtyard garage. The air was thick with the smell of damp concrete, exhaust fumes, and the sharp, metallic tang of ozone.
Nathan stepped out of the elevator, the heavy pistol already in his hand, the safety clicked off with a crisp, reassuring click. The mansion's automated emergency lighting cast a sickly amber glow across the rows of luxury vehicles parked in the bays. Ahead, the heavy steel-reinforced doors leading into the subterranean server facility stood ajar, the electronic control panel sparking violently, completely destroyed by a localized EMP device.
From the shadows of the corridor ahead, two dark figures dressed head-to-toe in matte-black tactical gear emerged silently, their assault rifles raised, night-vision goggles casting an eerie green reflection across their opaque face shields.
They didn't expect the CEO of Vance Holdings to be waiting for them in the dark with a loaded weapon.
Nathan didn't hesitate. He dropped into a classic tactical stance, raised his pistol, and fired twice before the intruders could even adjust their weapon barrels. The deafening cracks of gunfire echoed like thunder through the concrete garage. The lead operative stumbled backward, his tactical vest absorbing the impact of the first round before collapsing heavily against the side of a parked Aston Martin. The second operative instinctively dove to the side, bringing his rifle up to return fire.
Bullets chipped the concrete pillar inches from Nathan’s head, sending a shower of sharp stone dust into the air. Nathan rolled smoothly across the hood of a sedan, coming up on his knee behind the engine block as cover. He fired three rapid shots, clipping the second operative's shoulder and sending his assault rifle clattering across the slick floor.
Before the wounded operative could reach for his sidearm, a heavy shadow detached itself from the overhead ductwork above them and dropped squarely onto the intruder's back.
It was David.
With ruthless, cold efficiency, David drove the butt of his combat knife down onto the operative's helmet, instantly rendering him unconscious. He stood up, breathing heavily, wiping a streak of blood from his forehead where a stray bullet had grazed his skin.
"Clear," David barked, kicking the operative's weapon away across the floor. He looked over at Nathan, who was calmly lowering the hammer of his pistol and slipping it back into his shoulder holster. "You okay, sir?"
"Never better," Nathan said, his voice cold and steady. He walked over to the unconscious operative, knelt down, and roughly ripped the opaque face shield away from the man's face.
Underneath the tactical helmet was a young man in his late twenties, his face pale, breathing heavily through clenched teeth. Around his neck hung a heavy silver dog tag stamped with a serial number and a familiar emblem: a stylized golden eagle clutching a lightning bolt—the covert insignia of Aegis Security Solutions.
"Richard isn't just running a corporate coup," Nathan said, standing up and wiping his hands on a clean rag David handed him. "He’s waging a private war on my doorstep."
David looked down at the unconscious operatives, then back at Nathan. "If they sent an extraction and wipe team tonight, it means they know we have the decrypted files on the server. They know we have proof of the conspiracy."

Nathan turned toward the glowing doorway of the server room, where the amber status lights were blinking frantically as the final encrypted backup package finished uploading to an off-site, impenetrable vault.
"Let them know," Nathan whispered, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Because tomorrow morning, we're taking the fight directly into their boardroom."
