Chapter 13 - THE SEALED ENVELOPE

The morning sunlight beat down warmly on the cobblestone entryway as Nathan strode out across the front courtyard toward the main security gatehouse. The black sedan was still parked just outside the heavy wrought-iron bars, its engine idling quietly.
Standing by the security intercom pillar was an elderly man dressed in a meticulously tailored vintage tweed suit, his silver hair neatly brushed, leaning lightly on an ebony walking cane with a silver handle. As Nathan approached, the elderly man turned slowly, revealing a lined, weathered face adorned with deep, familiar eyes that held decades of accumulated secrets.
Nathan stopped a few feet away on the inside of the gate, his hands resting naturally at his sides, his eyes narrowing as he studied the man.
"You've grown into your father's shoulders, Nathan," the elderly man said, his voice smooth, cultured, and carrying an unmistakable British accent that seemed to echo from another era. "Though you carry a much heavier weight than he ever did."
Nathan didn't relax his posture. "Who are you? And how do you have my family's crest?"
The elderly man offered a thin, tired smile. He reached inside his tweed coat, withdrew a thick manila envelope sealed with heavy crimson wax bearing the intricate stamp of the Vance family crest, and slid it carefully through the narrow bars of the iron gate.
"My name is Julian Vance," the old man said quietly. "Your grandfather's younger brother. The uncle your father told you died in a fire in Geneva fifty years ago."
Nathan stared at the envelope on the stone pillar, his mind racing through decades of family history, corporate myths, and buried secrets. "My father said his entire family perished before I was born. There was no uncle Julian."
"Of course your father said that," Julian replied softly, leaning slightly on his cane. "When you spend your entire life building an empire in the shadows of intelligence agencies and global finance, you learn that dead men make the best secret keepers. Your father faked my death—and I faked his departure—to protect our bloodline from the very syndicate that Marcus and Arthur tried to sell you out to."
Nathan slowly stepped forward, picked up the heavy manila envelope, and broke the crimson wax seal. Inside was a thick stack of aged, yellowed parchment documents covered in handwritten notes, photographs, and cryptographic keys dating back to the Cold War.
"What is this?" Nathan demanded, looking up from the papers.
"It's the origin story of Vance Holdings, Nathan," Julian said, his eyes turning grim and serious. "Marcus and Arthur weren't rogue agents acting on their own whim. They were merely the modern foot soldiers of an older, much deeper cabal—a shadowy consortium known as The Architects, who have been steering the global economy and intelligence apparatuses from behind the curtain for over a century."
Julian pointed a trembling finger at the open envelope in Nathan's hands.
"They didn't just want your company, Nathan," Julian whispered, the morning wind suddenly feeling ice-cold against their skin. "They wanted your daughter's DNA. Because the quantum encryption protocols you coded into the neural network weren't just algorithms... they were designed using a biological genetic key that only members of our direct bloodline possess."

Nathan stared down at the yellowed parchment papers in his hands, the blood draining completely from his face as a terrifying, undeniable truth began to dawn upon him.
The war wasn't over. It had only just begun.
