Chapter 4 - DAWN OF RECKONING

The morning sun rose over the skyline of downtown Richmond, casting a blinding glare across the glass-and-steel facade of Vance Holdings' global headquarters—a gleaming fifty-story monolith that dominated the financial district. Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension, expensive cologne, and suppressed anxiety.
Around the massive polished walnut conference table sat the ten members of the executive board. At the head of the table sat Richard Vance, wearing a tailored charcoal-grey Brioni suit, his silver-streaked hair neatly combed, a calm, self-assured smile gracing his lips. To his immediate left sat corporate legal counsel Marcus Vance—no relation by blood, but a ruthless corporate shark who had engineered every hostile takeover the firm had executed in the last decade.
"Let's dispense with the pleasantries," Richard said, checking his luxury wristwatch with deliberate slowness. He looked around the table at the sea of anxious faces. "Nathan Vance is absent from this emergency board meeting. According to our bylaws, if the Chief Executive Officer fails to appear within fifteen minutes of a legally called extraordinary session, the board reserves the right to vote on an interim leadership transition to ensure corporate stability."
A murmur of agreement rippled through several board members who had been quietly bought off by Richard's offshore syndicate over the previous months. Marcus Vance adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, nodding sagely.
"Given the unfortunate... personal scandals currently surrounding Mr. Vance's domestic life—including active child protection investigations and reports of severe household instability—the board has a fiduciary duty to protect shareholder value by immediately suspending his voting rights and transferring executive control to the Vice Chairman," Marcus declared, sliding a thick stack of printed resolution documents across the table.
Richard smiled inwardly. Everything was going precisely according to the master plan. Isabella had played her part, the diversion team had executed their infiltration, and by noon today, Nathan Vance would be a legally deposed corporate exile, stripped of his fortune, his company, and his legacy.
"I move to vote," Richard announced, raising his hand. "All in favor of invoking Clause 14-B for immediate executive suspension..."
CLANG.
The heavy, soundproof mahogany double doors of the boardroom suddenly swung open with a resounding crash that rattled the crystal water pitchers on the table.
Every head at the table snapped toward the entrance.
There stood Nathan Vance.
He didn't look like a disgraced CEO facing ruin. He looked like an executioner stepping onto the scaffold. Dressed in a pitch-black bespoke three-piece suit, his shirt collar crisp, his tie knotted with lethal precision, Nathan walked into the room with slow, measured strides. Behind him walked David, carrying a heavy metallic briefcase, flanked by two armed federal marshals in full tactical dress.
The color instantly drained from Richard’s face. His hand froze halfway in the air.
"Suspension?" Nathan’s voice cut through the silent boardroom like a razor blade, cold, resonant, and dripping with controlled fury. "You don't have the quorum for a suspension, Richard. And you certainly don't have the legal standing."
Richard forced a tight, nervous smile, lowering his hand and gripping the edge of the table. "Nathan... what a surprise. We were told you were indisposed dealing with... family matters."
"My family matters are currently being handled by the proper authorities," Nathan said smoothly as he stopped at the foot of the long conference table, resting both hands on the polished wood and leaning forward slightly. "Which is precisely why I’m here. To discuss your family matters, Richard."
Marcus Vance stood up, his professional demeanor slipping into defensive aggression. "Mr. Vance, this is a private corporate board meeting! You cannot barge in here with law enforcement officers without a formal court order—"
Nathan didn't even look at Marcus. He simply raised his left hand and snapped his fingers once.
David immediately stepped forward, opened the metallic briefcase on the adjacent credenza, and pulled out a thick stack of heavy cardstock folders, tossing one down directly in front of Marcus, and another in front of Richard.
"Take a look," Nathan commanded softly. "Page four. The unredacted financial routing logs from Aegis Security Solutions, detailing monthly wire transfers originating from an offshore account registered under Richard Vance’s personal social security number."
Richard’s eyes bulged. He snatched the folder open, his hands trembling violently as he scanned the documents. The pages contained exact transaction IDs, encrypted hashes, and sworn federal indictments detailing economic espionage, illegal wiretapping, and conspiracy to commit corporate extortion.
"This... this is fabricated!" Richard shouted, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the carpet. "You're forging federal documents! You're insane!"
"I might be insane," Nathan said, straightening up and walking slowly around the table toward his cousin, his eyes locked onto Richard's terrified gaze like a hawk zeroing in on a field mouse. "For trusting you. For letting you sit at my table. For believing that family meant something more than a line on a corporate balance sheet."
He stopped just inches from Richard, towering over him, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal hiss.
"You tried to steal my company. You tried to destroy my life. But worst of all... you used an innocent, terrified nine-year-old child as a pawn in your sick game."
Nathan turned his head to look directly at the trembling members of the executive board, who sat frozen in stunned terror, not daring to breathe.
"As of this second," Nathan announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the boardroom, "every single individual who participated in, aided, or looked the other way regarding the Project Janus conspiracy is officially terminated, blacklisted, and facing immediate federal indictment."

He turned back to Richard, who was now backed up against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Richmond skyline, pale as a corpse.
"Get out of my building, Richard," Nathan whispered. "Before I decide to stop playing by the law."
